Equal parts Devendra and Daniel Johnston, David Thomas
Broughton makes delicately fragranced music that is both
overtly fragile and inwardly strong - drawing the ear deep
within the compositions then keeping you tethered through
emotional intensity. Best viewed as an anthology of recordings
spanning the past six years, 'It's In There Somewhere' sees
Broughton exploring the same themes which have coloured his
recent work - with ideas of loss, love and hope all bundled up
in a tender package that veritably hums with the weight of
emotional tension throughout. Whilst always erring on the side
of melancholy, Broughton never becomes moribund - instead
evoking comparisons to Elliot Smith in his ability to
articulate heartbreak and lost dreams in a fashion that
demands you go on that journey with him. Possessing an
atmosphere that could either be high noon, or humid evening,
'It's In There Somewhere' opens through the waltzing rhythms
of 'Circle Is Never Complete' - wherein The Stranglers 'Golden
Brown' is hinted at through undulating synths that could be
straight from a Vangelis love scene. Immediately juxtaposing
this is 'Negativity' and its frenzied strings, before
'Gracefully Silent' sidles into view with tape effects galore
for some warped folk music that works as well backwards as it
does facing forward. Elsewhere, 'Ain't Got No Sole' brings to
mind Arthur Russell, 'So Much Sin To Forgive' is overflowing
with twanging guitars, whilst 'Look What I Have Done' is a
gorgeous conclusion of diffused atmospherics that swan-dives
the record into merry oblivion.
