:: The fourth album by the French black metal act Aldaaron is a ::
:: well-balanced fusion of atmospheric and pagan black metal: from ::
:: the former we have prolonged tremolo-picked lead lines ::
:: accompanied by blastbeats; from the latter, specific groovy ::
:: melodies at a medium pace, something like that. Aldaaron use ::
:: keyboards as well, but this synthed howling just supports the ::
:: guitar parts mainly, the keyboards are not able to turn the ::
:: general atmosphere of the album into symphonic black metal. ::
:: ::
:: However, there is no denying the truth, we really hear ::
:: Emperor's influence on "Majestic Heights, Melancholic Depths": ::
:: check 'Monti Vagus', 'Chroniques des Jours d'Alors', even the ::
:: Dawn cover 'The Knell and the World' sounds a bit ::
:: Emperor-esque. ::
:: ::
:: The production on the album is clean, which would be a merit of ::
:: the opus, but alas, the drums sound very triggered while the ::
:: guitar is quite harsh. And if the guitar sound attaches an ::
:: element of aggression to Aldaaron's aura, then more than a ::
:: little obvious electronic drum sounds (they are manifested ::
:: during frequent breaks and rolls around the toms most of all) ::
:: come at the cost of the general sound, injecting almost ::
:: industrial deadliness into it. This is the biggest minus of the ::
:: album. ::
:: ::
:: 'Monti Vagus' stands out from the other songs with a slow ::
:: melodic passage with a solo that becomes more complex as it ::
:: progresses, unwinding like a coil spring û it's a very ::
:: effective composition. In its turn, 'Les Tambours et le Fer' is ::
:: the most unfortunate song: palm-muted riffing makes it almost ::
:: brutal. "Majestic Heights, Melancholic Depths" can be ::
:: recommended to those who like old-school black metal in a ::
:: modern package. ::
