This album is another one of the Global
Underground series, an enormously popular
and successful series featuring some of the
world's best DJs. And there is no doubt that
Nick Warren is one of the world's best DJs.
And personally, I think this album is
fabulous, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it
to just anyone. In fact, I think one of the
weaknesses of this album is it is going to
be unappealing to a variety of different
people - it may not have a niche. For the
casual listener to electronic music, it
might be too dark and intense to be an
enjoyable listen. For the serious electronic
music fan, I think the track selection is
only a B or B-. The mixing is superb, the
sound is excellent, and some of the tracks
are absolutely incredible. Nevertheless, I
think some of the track selections, and
placements, are not up to Nick's usual high
standard. And its intensity and heaviness at
times will scare away the casual listener.
Not that there should be anything wrong with
not making an album that appeals to a
certain niche. That kind of catering to a
specific group is part of the reason we have
a lot of bad music out there right now. But
I still don't think this is Nick Warren's
best work. I've seen him mix live, and he
blew my mind, and I've listened to his other
albums, and I don't think this effort, as a
whole, is his best. Parts of it are
brilliant, fun, energizing and delightful to
the ear. Other parts are subpar. So it's a
mix of great and not as great. If you love
trance, it's not a bad album to pop in the
CD player now and again. If not, don't
bother. This one isn't for you.
