Pacifika's Silvana Kane, Adam Popowitz, and Toby Peter
quietly spent 2006 immersed in the studio capturing a
sound. What does a band comprised of a Peruvian born
singer with a love of flamenco and electronica, a dub
infused bassist raised in Barbados, and a Canadian bred
guitarist with roots in 80's new wave, truly sound like?
The answer is a glorious ten song collection entitled
Asunci≤n to be released in early 2007. Drawing from all
their influences, the recording process was at times
equally unifying and complicated. ôMßs y Mßsö, which tells
the story of a butterfly flying across the ocean despite
an inevitable end, went through metamorphosis four times
before the song found itÆs sparse one voice and one
electric guitar arrangement. In contrast, the infectious
ôPalomaö was spontaneously written on stage during their
2005 Canadian and U.S. tour, and recorded with the same
fervor when they returned home. For the lyrics, Silvana
found using her native tongue of Spanish on nine of the
LPÆs tracks a clear and honest outlet. ôI wanted to
captivate a feeling of warmthà of toes in the sand, of
moss on bark, of intimacy and truthö she says. Adam
defines the production as ôLatin alternativeö which also
features the drum & bass inspired ballad ôSweetö, the dub
tinged single ôMe Caφö and the anthemic, lead off track
ôSolö which invokes memories of vintage Massive Attack and
U2. Throughout this diversity, there is a common voice. A
seductive plea for joy. A blending of cultures and spirit.
ôA new world music, ô as Toby would say. Asunci≤n is the
sound of Pacifika.

Pacifika pasaron el a±o 2006 en el estudio de grabaci≤n
sumergidos silenciosamente en la captura de un sonido.
┐Cußl es el sonido real de un grupo compuesto por una
cantante nacida en Per· con pasi≤n por el flamenco y la
electr≤nica, un bajista criado en Barbados, y un
guitarrista de Canadß con raφces en la m·sica 'new wave'
de los a±os 80? La respuesta es el CD titulado Asunci≤n,
una maravillosa colecci≤n de diez canciones que serß
lanzado a principios del 2007. Inspirados por la fusi≤n de
todas sus influencias, el proceso fue tanto unificante
como complicado. El sonido de "Mßs y Mßs", que cuenta la
historia de una mariposa que volaba a trßves del ocΘano a
pesar de su final inevitable, tuvo que metamorfosearse
cuatro veces antes de ser simplificado a una sola voz
acompa±ada de un arreglo de guitarra elΘctrica. Por
contraste, la contagiante "Paloma" fue creada
espontßneamente en el escenario durante la gira musical
por Canadß y los Estados Unidos en el a±o 2005 y grabada
con el mismo fervor al regreso de la gira. Para la lφrica
en nueve de las pistas musicales, Silvana encontr≤ una
salida clara y honesta en el uso del espa±ol, su lengua
nativa. "Quise cautivar un sentimiento de calor... de
arena tocando los pies, de musgo en la corteza, de
intimidad y verdad" ella dice. Adam define la producci≤n
como m·sica "latina alternativa" que tambiΘn presenta la
balada "Sweet" inspirada por el sonido del tambor y el
bajo, el single "Me Caφ" de sonido dub, y la pista "Sol"
de melodφa anthemic que invoca memorias de los clßsicos
Massive Attack y U2. A travΘs de esta diversidad, existe
una voz com·n. Una s·plica seductora de emoci≤n. Un
mezclar de culturas y espφritu. "Una nueva m·sica
global"como dirφa Toby. Asunci≤n es el sonido de Pacifika.
