Ok, heres the deal with this one. The
original version of 'Low Life' was released
back in 1999 which only came with 8 tracks
and was released on 'End Recordings'. I
spotted this one which had 15 tracks and this
is apparently an import(UK), released in 2000
on the US label 'Will Records'. Check
www.cdnow.com or www.amazon.co.uk.
'Stepping a beat or two off the conventional
dance music path, U.K. clubmongers Layo and
Matthew B have produced an album for those
who can appreciate the genre's more
unconventional excursions. An eclectic mix of
sounds from strident vocals to electro-beats
that dig deep into funk, this album sits
somewhere on the fringe between club tracks
and high-concept commercial dance.
Perhaps due to its ambitious range of
elements, Low Life feels slightly unrefined;
some tracks fail to truly build. Yet a few,
dexterous cuts shine. "Spooked" melds a
hypnotic fusion of chewy beat snares with a
good ol' funky breakdown. "Deep South,"
easily the tightest track on the album, pairs
spiritual jazz instrumentals with an uptempo
vocal caress.'
