The original members of Cabaret Voltaire-Kirk, Stephen
Mallinder, and Chris Watson - first began working together
in 1974 in the industrial city of Sheffield (which would
later produce the seminal post-techno imprint, Warp).
Inspired by Brian Eno's championing of the creative role
of the non-musician and the tape recorder and recording
studio as the ôreal instruments," Kirk, Mallinder, and
Watson used reel-to-reel players and an ever-expanding
array of electronic equipment and effects to create dense
fields of sound. For Kirk, who trained as a visual artist,
the use of tapes and electronics was an extension of his
own experience working with sounds in art installations.
The trio drew on a broad range of influences in this early
period, including Andy Warhol and the Factory scene in New
York, as well as avant-garde composers like John Cage and
Karlheinz Stockhausen. Currently, Kirk is working with
Mute Records on a collection of unreleased material from
this early pre-punk period of Cabaret Voltaire's history
(from 1974-76) that will be released later this year. This
retrospective, Kirk says, will reveal the full extent of
their interest in the work of the classical avant-garde.
