Right off the bat, the most noticeable factor on Crimson DawnÆs fourth
album is the change in lead singers with Claudio Cesari coming on in
place of Antonio Pecere. The two vocalistsÆ differences arenÆt as
exaggerated as it felt on first listen as both exhibit a dramatic tenor,
but CesariÆs combination of a slightly higher range and thicker accent
can be admittedly a little abrasive in comparison. Thankfully itÆs not
the sort of thing thatÆs a dealbreaker and the extra conviction in his
delivery ultimately enhances the bandÆs theatrical outlook.
Moving beyond that, It Came From The Stars essentially picks up where
2020Æs Inverno left off with the same power-doom out in full force. The
guitars are as thick and full as ever, the rhythms remain adept at
maneuvering shifts from doom plods to driving power metal chugs, and the
symphonic elements maintain relentlessly exotically bombastic textures.
I can also appreciate how the uplifting spirit can feel at odds with the
genreÆs usual brooding tendencies while hinting at something a little
more ominous beneath the surface.
With that, the songwriting is also tight with the band being the most in
their element when working with a combination of slow, grandiose riffs
and sweeping choruses. ôHunterÆs Dream,ö ôNera Sinfonia,ö and ôThe
Ringmasterö stand out the most in this regard and find ways to shake
things up individually with slight tempo shifts and extra flourishes. As
far as outliers go, ôFade Awayö almost dips into AOR metal with its
upbeat pacing and optimistic piano while ôThe Colour Out Of Spaceö toys
with a couple appropriately spacey segments amidst the usual epic doom
business.
With the changes and other projects releasing in the three years since
Inverno, itÆs nice to see Crimson Dawn keep up the momentum with It Came
From The Stars. The singer shift might take a bit of getting used to
(might also just be me projecting, to be honest) but it ultimately works
with the bandÆs established style. ItÆs tricky to tell whether I prefer
this album or its predecessor, but the heightened character certainly
works in its favor.
