| | An absolute classic EP from the heavily | |
| | influential Basement label, pioneers of the | |
| | jungle tekno sound of '91-'93. This | |
| | particular record, the "We Can Rock It EP" | |
| | by Basement Phil and The Engineers (aka Phil | |
| | Wells, label owner, alongside Jack Smooth, | |
| | frequent engineer for most of the Basement | |
| | releases, and Steve Turvey, who I'm not | |
| | entirely sure who the hell he is), was one of | |
| | the earliest cross-over tunes from the label, | |
| | not to mention their first teaming up with | |
| | vocalist Wendy Warchall (who would later go | |
| | on to sing on the '93 anthem "We Are Unity"). | |
| | | |
| | The A-side contains two mixes of "Flying", a | |
| | melodic little tune with that familiar | |
| | resonating bassline (a Jack Smooth trademark) | |
| | and beautifully progressing string lines. I | |
| | personally like the first mix, which features | |
| | Wendy's vocals, but the instrumental version | |
| | is right on as well. You'll notice that the | |
| | instrumental mix sounds warped towards the | |
| | end -- this is due to the vinyl being pressed | |
| | slightly off-centre, and as far as I can | |
| | tell, this happens on 9 out of 10 copies. | |
| | Let's hope for a proper repress on the new | |
| | Basement Classics line that'll let this song | |
| | be heard the way it should. | |
| | | |
| | The flipside, containing two mixes of the | |
| | EP's title track, is a little bit more on the | |
| | poppy side of things, but still well wicked. | |
| | The full length "Extended Clock Mix" is where | |
| | it's at, with the catchy vocals "baby, we can | |
| | rock it all night, one thing I know we can do | |
| | is rock it rock it". And you can tell that | |
| | this was their attempt at a crossover, as | |
| | there's a radio edit following up directly | |
| | afterwards. All in all, good stuff from the | |
| | Basement crew. | |
