ItÆs been a while since we last heard from Antye Greie-Fuchs (aka
AGF) & Jⁿrgen Kⁿhn, their last album bubbled up five years ago and
then disappeared, probably to give Antye time to pursue her
ongoing AGF project (among many others). Now theyÆre back and
æDeinetwegenÆ is the duoÆs most ambitious record to date, taking
cues from the dangerous world of American blues. Apparently
spurred on by listening to John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, Antye
and Jⁿrgen give their own white Germanic take on the genre. Of
course this isnÆt the easiest of things, blues is such a delicate
genre, such a traditional part of music and a form of music rooted
in hardship, depression and slavery û pretty far removed from
Berlin circa 2007 I would think. However, the two electronic
musicians put together something that sidesteps MobyÆs cynical
sample-and-loop technique and tries to do something genuinely
interesting with the sounds and sentiments of the music. It
actually reminds me somewhat of Jan JelinekÆs take on jazz music
æLoop-Finding-Jazz-RecordsÆ, which did a similar thing with
another genre. I canÆt say that æDeinetwegenÆ is always
particularly on-point with its experiments, but for the most part
it is an engaging listen well worth a closer look.
