Some people like to label 1995 as one of metal's worst years due to
bands like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath botching their releases. Grunge
being a dominant genre in mainstream at the time also certainly didn't
help, but peel a layer underneath and you will find out that 1995 might
actually be the year with the biggest concentration of classic releases,
especially in the power metal. It was the year that gave us
"Imaginations From The Other Side" and a big jump in quality for Gamma
Ray in form of this album.
From the moment you start this beast, it opens similarly to
"Imaginations From The Other Side", sending its longest, most epic and
heaviest song onto you from the start. In this case that would be
"Rebellion in Dreamland" which never feels like it's overlong,
particularly due to guitar and vocal performances from Kai and Dirk. Its
immediate follow-up "Man On a Mission" is a fast-paced twin guitar
assault on your ears, and this will repeat itself quite often on the
album, on songs like "Salvation's Calling" or "Gods of Deliverance". So
other than the opening track and the surprisingly good ballad "Farewell"
most of the tracks here are 4-5 minute long fast power metal affairs. On
paper that might sound a bit boring, but each track has an uniquely
catchy chorus or riff, so it never feels like you're listening to a
repetitive borefest. Production is really good too. It's not
overproduced or overengineered, so you end up hearing a lot of
instruments without them interrupting each other while that "dirty" feel
still stays while you're listening.
All across the board, performances are top notch. Kai's voice is
shockingly good considering last time he did full-time vocal duties was
on "Walls of Jericho", way back in 1985. Hell, I'd say he sounds better
here than during his Helloween days. Him and Dirk are very much the core
of what makes this album so fucking good. Just listen to that solo on
"Rebellion in Dreamland" or the main riff on the title track, it is
impossible to not bang your head. Thomas Nack does a good job keeping
the band together through all of this, most noticably on the "Rebellion
in Dreamland" where the tempo changes quite often. Last, but not least,
Rubach's basslines on here are very creative, not just following the
guitars, adding quite a bit to repeat listenings. The guest performance
from Michael Kiske on the track "Time to Break Free" is also really
good, singlehandedly making the chorus infectiously catchy.
If you ever wanted to know what is the appeal of power metal or Gamma
Ray specifically, this album is a good place to start, you cannot
possibly go wrong with this monster here. You should check it out right
now if you somehow haven't.
