Too Late to Pray is one vicious beast of an album, and it makes no bones
about ripping you to shreds from the get-go. Thick, meaty, doomy riffage
merges effortlessly with a slickly-mixed, oily sounding drum line û and
by æoilyÆ I mean oily like a well-greased tank treadà or a
freshly-cleaned shiv. By the time the eponymous tyrant came through
roaring his apocalyptic vision at me through my computer speakers, I was
mesmerised. Entranced. Spellbound. Whatever verb you like û even though
IÆve been avidly listening to metal for over a decade now, I was hooked
like a thirteen-year-old boy who puts on Master of Puppets for the first
time. They simply donÆt make æem like this anymore.
As one might be able to discern from my Falconer and Tad Morose fandom,
IÆm already a definite sucker for the aggressive USPM-influenced,
thrashier brand of power metal. But TyrantÆs Too Late to Pray is both,
at once, this distilled and supersaturated American thrash-power
delivered in highly lethal dosages, and also a purveyor of the sort of
haunting otherworldly horror that you might find in the occult-rock side
of early metal and NWoBHM like Coven, Black Sabbath, Venom and Lou
Taylor-era Satan / Blind Fury.
Actually, Lou Taylor is a pretty good comparison point here. Glen MayÆs
voice is actually fairly similar to the Satan vocalistÆs, having a
similar tenor, inflection and range û but he really brings everything
Lou did and more to his vocal performance here, chewing his mike stand
with gleeful and savage abandon. Throat-ripping beastly snarls,
unearthly howls, eldritch tremolo wails, early Geoff Tate-worthy high
shrieks, æa fell voice on the airÆ, clear-to-the-point-of-crystal
melodic croonsà itÆs impossible to overstate both the versatility of his
range and his emotional delivery, or the effectiveness of the reverb in
the mixing to make it sound like his voice was coming from either the
most perilous and jealously-guarded heights of the µternal firmament or
from the blackest and foulest abyss of the damned.
That fits perfectly with the mood of Too Late to Pray, which deals
almost entirely with eschatological-Parousia themes. End of the world,
apocalypse stuff. Right off the bat weÆre given a whiff of sulphur and
burning flesh and bone as we are treated to the torments of a damned
soul in µternal agony in the title track. And the rest of the album
continues apace from there: angels battling demons, lost souls wandering
the wastes of a ruined earth, hints of a nuclear holocaust, the
torturous and fatal choice set before the human soul when faced with the
cosmic cataclysm. As such, you have choruses from above and church bells
tolling ominously in the background throughout the album, which, when
added to the full-bodied guitarwork, frenetic solos and gun-oil
drumwork, gives Too Late to Pray an atmosphere as thick and heavy as a
cloud of fallout. Now, IÆm not a fundamentalist of any sort, so IÆm
under no illusions about the end of the world looking anything like this
except in a highly figurative or mystical senseà but as far as fantasy
goes, this is pure heavy metal, and itÆs completely awesome.
Again I keep coming back to this: the songwriting and composition are
sublime. You have your doom-laden, heavier-than-hell tracks like
æTyrantÆs Revelation IIÆ and æBabylonÆ, and then you have
speedier-thrashier blazers like æThe NazareneÆ and æInto the FlamesÆ.
All of them are performed exquisitely and with a technical precision
that still boggles me. Much as IÆd like to say that the whole album
consists of standout tracks û and it does û the most memorable points
here for me are the baroquely intricate and complex æValley of DeathÆ
(featuring Glen at both his most savage and his most deceptively calm)
and the almost Sleep-ish doom-monster with its Near Eastern melodic
frills æBeginning of the EndÆ. æToo Late to PrayÆ is also a highlight
just on account of its being the slash to the jugular which kicks the
album off strong.
I admit to having gotten a bit jaded by metal of late, but discovering
this 1980s classic from the West Coast USPM scene pretty much
singlehandedly awakened my interest again. This is one of those albums
that really pushed the envelope of what metal musicians were capable of
within the confines of the style, and it deserves to be lauded as a
subgenre classic.
