| | Oldskool anthem alert! | |

| | One of the earliest recordings from the one | |
| | like Goldie was this four-tracker for the | |
| | Synthetic Hardcore Phonography label, and | |
| | what a fucking blinder of an EP it is. | |
| | Recorded under the name "Metalheads" back | |
| | before the label was a vision in his mind, | |
| | this EP entitled 'Terminator' after the lead | |
| | track broke musical boundaries. | |
| | | |
| | 'Terminator' is the track that rewrote | |
| | history, being the first tune to utilise the | |
| | pitchshifting effect on a drum loop while | |
| | keeping the tempo in time. It sounds | |
| | commonplace today, but back in 1992, hearing | |
| | something like this after the vocal sample | |
| | "you're talking about things I haven't done | |
| | yet!" was a mindblowing experience. | |
| | Surprisingly, even still ten years later, the | |
| | track holds up amazingly well as a tune. | |
| | It's then followed up by "Kemistry", a | |
| | beautifully melodic piece of proto- | |
| | drum-and-bass written for the now late DJ | |
| | Kemistry, featuring ethereal vocals by Diane | |
| | Charlemagne. This track was later reworked | |
| | for Goldie's debut album, "Timeless", but | |
| | it's still the original that sticks out in | |
| | most ravers' minds. The flipside kicks off | |
| | with "Knowledge", which samples among other | |
| | things the TV series "The Outer Limits" and | |
| | Outlander's "Vamp" (but in reverse), while | |
| | using his pitchshifting trick from | |
| | "Terminator" again in short bursts. Finally, | |
| | things wind down with a tune entitled | |
| | "Sinister". If you're at all familiar with | |
| | Goldie's work, however, you'll recognize this | |
| | track as being an early template for what was | |
| | later to become "Angel" and "Saint Angel", | |
| | among others -- he uses many of the same | |
| | motifs across his songs, and this is the | |
| | first appearance of many of his hallmark | |
| | darkcore sounds. As well as a cheeky sample | |
| | or two... ;) | |
| | | |
| | This is a top EP, without a doubt, essential | |
| | listening for all those who know, all those | |
| | from the oldskool, and all those newskoolers | |
| | who must expand their knowledge and wisdom. | |
