| | OH MY GOSH... now if there ever was a | |
| | classic, here it is. Omni Trio, the | |
| | recording pseudonym of one Rob Haigh, made | |
| | his debut on the legendary Moving Shadow | |
| | record label in 1993 with this EXCELLENT | |
| | four-tracker, the "Mystic Stepper: Volume | |
| | Two" EP. If you're wondering... "Wait, | |
| | volume two? What happened to volume one?" | |
| | It turns out the original version of "Mystic | |
| | Stepper" appeared on Omni Trio's first EP, | |
| | recorded for the Candidate label (CAT002), | |
| | where it was simply subtitled "Feel Good". | |
| | Coincidentally, the original versions of | |
| | "Thru The Vibe" and "Nu Grooves" appeared on | |
| | Candidate as well, under the London Steppers | |
| | pseudonym. | |
| | | |
| | As far as this EP goes, it's totally | |
| | brilliant. The title track, "Mystic Stepper | |
| | (Feel Better)", is one of those that was | |
| | rinsed completely when it came out and | |
| | cemented his status as a producer to be | |
| | watched. The second track on the A-side, | |
| | "Stronger", fuses the gap between | |
| | intelligent techno and hardcore, with its | |
| | in-ya-face kickin beat melded with the | |
| | floaty strings and vocals. On the flipside, | |
| | the two versions of "Mainline" show his | |
| | willingness to experiment. The version | |
| | simply titled "Mainline" is closer to the | |
| | traditional Moving Shadow sound of the time, | |
| | while the "Original Techno Mix" is a | |
| | late-80's electro-styled freakout. All in | |
| | all, a great EP, and one that will | |
| | undoubtedly go down in history as a high | |
| | point for the Moving Shadow label. | |
