æ22-year-old Will Holland is a bastard. Despite his tender years,
heÆs already released an unnervingly brilliant debut album, "The
Fifth Exotic", and a string of great singles. Git. A year on, heÆs
back with his second full-length album, and - would you believe it -
itÆs even better than his debut. The Worcester based DJ has clearly
learnt from his experience as part of funk outfits the Limp Twins
and Quantic Soul Orchestra, as "Apricot Morning" is brimming with
live breaks, sparkling horns and sweet guitar licks- resulting in
an album which is far more funk- focused than his varied and often
down beat debut. Thus, we get electrifying funk breaks, horn-toting
DnÆB, jazz funk two steppers and energy-sapping club thumpers
("Blackstone Rock", "Off the Beaten Track ", the Alice Russel
voiced "Sweet Calling"). ItÆs a fabulously mature collection,
brimming with swagger, confidence and tight musicality missing from
HollandÆs earlier work. It begs the question; is there anything
this man canÆt do? æ
BreakinÆ Point
ItÆs always nice to see someone break into the scene, knock out a
few twelve inches and create a demand for themselves in a short
space of time time.22 year old Will Holland (of West Midlands fame)
has done that, his debut album, last springs æThe 5th ExoticÆ had
everyone from Kruder and Dorfmeister to LTJ Bukem raving about it,
not bad for someone who prior to this had only just left music
college. ÆApricot MorningÆ opens in a style with with.ÆApricot
MorningÆ, which gives a good impression that its nice and lively
around the way where Quantic gets up to start the day. Can it be an
offence to say that Quantic makes summer albums? IÆm not sure, but
they are better for warmer spells and late night parties rather
than sitting around the coal fire this winter. There are tracks
that suit that Brazil-esque football fever such as æBrand New
WatusiÆ and tracks like æSearch the HeavensÆ (featuring Alice
Russell on vocals) will play to your emotions. ItÆs a girlÆs affair
as much as it is for the guys, Will sister features on Sax and
Alice Russell makes her mark more than once. ThereÆs lots of Double
Bass and touches of live everything right the way through this very
through this very well produced and thought out album. There is the
odd dampener, namely æPrimate BoogalooÆ (Featuring Aspects), which
should be behind bars. Hip house, big beat , rap (aaah a new
genre). You cannot argue though that Quantic has studied well and
knows when and how to deliver. Rise and Shine to the best start to
the day.
