████ Most critics weren't sure what to make of To ████
████ Rococo Rot at the time, and you can really see ████
████ that from the way 'The Amateur View' was ████
████ reviewed. Released by Mute in the US, the album ████
████ cut through the underground's protective ████
████ netting more obviously than its epochal ████
████ predecessor 'Veiculo' (one of our all-time ████
████ faves), and helped Stefan Schneider and ████
████ brothers Ronald and Robert Lippok achieve a ████
████ level of notoriety that had so far eluded them. ████
████ But their sound - somewhere between post-rock, ████
████ kraut-pop and glitchy electronic minimalism - ████
████ wasn't easy to pigeonhole; they ended up being ████
████ lumped in with the nascent "electronica" set, ████
████ compared with Pan Sonic and Brian Eno by ████
████ Pitchfork and Warp stars AFX, Squarepusher and ████
████ Autechre by the British press. The truth, as ████
████ always, was more complicated; to our ears, To ████
████ Rococo Rot followed a tradition of German ████
████ experimental innovation, and it wasn't ████
████ completely surprising that, based in Berlin, ████
████ they made the sonic choices that brought them ████
████ to 'The Amateur View'. Just as Tortoise had ████
████ been inspired by Chicago's jazz and blues ████
████ history and Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis were ████
████ responding from British prog and outsider rock, ████
████ To Rococo Rot took lessons from Can, Conrad ████
████ Schnitzler and Cluster and never stopped ████
████ tracking the developments that surrounded them, ████
████ cribbing notes from Move D, Mouse on Mars and ████
████ Carsten Nicolai for additional electronic ████
████ juice. ████
████ ████
████ 'The Amateur View' is the trio's coolest, ████
████ loungiest album; if 'Veiculo' had subtly ████
████ collided with Mille Plateaux's developing ████
████ "Clicks 'n Cuts" sound, then this time TRR cast ████
████ their net further, not ignoring the corroded ████
████ samples and repetitive rhythms that would ████
████ center Robert Lippok's later Raster Noton ████
████ material, but adding references to vintage new ████
████ age music, early synth gear and the sultry ████
████ lite-jazz library tomes that informed ████
████ Stereolab, Broadcast's debut and Air's first ████
████ couple of LPs. TRR were of their time then, but ████
████ not completely beholden to it; listening back ████
████ now, their muddle of ingredients is strikingly ████
████ prescient. There's a hint of Wolfgang Voigt's ████
████ GAS material in 'Prado', sampling Polish film ████
████ composer Wojciech Kilar's 'Love Remembered' ████
████ (from his score for 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'), ████
████ cutting into its swollen strings with pattered ████
████ live percussion and squelchy analogue cycles. ████
████ While the anthemic 'Cars', that dials dry, ████
████ resonant Tortoise-like bass riffs into a ████
████ lattice of grungy rhythm box knocks and ████
████ rudimentary glockenspiel, sounding like a ████
████ bridge between City Slang and Drag City, and ████
████ 'Telema' (still one of the most unashamedly ████
████ gorgeous TRR tracks, for our money) is a ████
████ euphoric marvel that massages hopeful kosmische ████
████ oscillations into hollow bontempi metronomics ████
████ and lite-AOR deviations. ████
████ ████
████ Maybe TRR's most enduring moment is when they ████
████ use a sample of Gigi Masin's hallucinogenic new ████
████ age cogitation 'Clouds' to anchor 'Die Dinge ████
████ des Lebens', inspiring Bjoerk's later ████
████ 'Vespertine' stand-out 'It's in Our Hands' in ████
████ the process. We can't know for sure, but it's ████
████ hard to imagine the track would be sampled over ████
████ 30 times subsequently, appearing in tracks from ████
████ Main Attrakionz, Post Malone, Five Deez and ████
████ NVSVR, if it wasn't for To Rococo Rot. And the ████
████ suite of additional tracks just make the ████
████ package even more tantalizing. These aren't ████
████ random inclusions: we're served with the b- ████
████ sides from the 'Cars' EP; the "Laengs" version ████
████ of 'Telema' from the 10" single release; a ████
████ handful of tracks from 'TRRD', the band's ████
████ collaboration with Soul Static Sound boss and ████
████ Rougj Trade legend Darryl Moore; and the ████
████ 'Pantone' tracks from their 'Music Is A Hungry ████
████ Ghost' album with i-sound. It completes the ████
████ picture, showing how central TRR were to the ████
████ rapid developments and evolutions happening in ████
████ and around the underground, and how well the ████
████ music has aged. ████
