The five members of Attic Ocean are united by their love of spherical and
dreamy music. With their debut single "August / Glass", the young band around
singer Hanni attracted local and international attention. With their debut EP
"The Heavy Blue And Then After" they are now embarking on a new musical
journey that is tantamount to a commitment to a nostalgic and melodic sound.
Attic Ocean's sound has been compared to bands like Slowdive, Cranberries and
   Wolf Alice.

On "The Heavy Blue And Then After" Attic Ocean prove why they were called
"Germany's dreamiest band": With clearly audible roots in shoegaze and indie
of the 90s, they bring a breath of fresh air to the german and international
   music scene.

We had already talked about Attic Ocean, a very young band from D sseldorf
that, with their "August," has crowned our summer of 2023. They have today
released their very first physical release, "the heavy blue and then after,"
which contains, in addition to the aforementioned "August," five other
   tracks.

The sound design of Attic Ocean is rooted in a syncretism that unites all
possible dreampop instances: everything is delicately wrapped in a veil of
rarefied melancholy, which can transform into gentle sadness or be sublimated
into memories and desires filled with beauty. There are Alvvays, who make an
appearance in the opener "Escapades," with an indie soul and a rhythmic
section that hints at post-punk, but also Slowdive and Still Corners,
traceable especially in the delightful spacepop of "Glass."

"Pistachio," perhaps the most accessible track even for an audience
unfamiliar with shoegaze and dreampop, moves on expanded indie pop textures
and acoustic flutters that flank more typically gaze-like guitars. A perfect
travel song, as also reminded by the song's music video. Then there is
"Fall," which, with its airy melody and certain poetic images in the lyrics
("City's screaming, noisy walk/Neverending lullaby" "Blurry shapes in acid
rain/tell them summer comes again" "Scent of petrichor and storm/icy flowers
start to bloom"), grows with each listen, and especially, "Les Yeux Ferm ," a
brilliant pearl in French about the heartache of love, which features
enchanting shoegaze swirls in the finale.

But the true masterpiece of "the heavy blue and then after" is the already
mentioned "August", so pure and beautiful that it brings tears to one's eyes.
Here, the graceful vocality of Hannin Nasirat paints backgrounds of sweet
spleen, becoming an instrument herself, an ineffable wind among the guitars.
Melancholy to sing at the top of one's lungs with the sun on your skin, the
wind in your face, freedom in your veins, the infinite reflected in your
   eyes.

                                  Dream Pop
                              is a subgenre of
                     alternative rock and neo-psychedelia
that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop
melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions,
and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often
overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the
two genre terms have at times been
                              used interchangeably.
