finally! for terranova fans the wait is over. a foretaste of their
long awaited new album, the "running away" ep, is out now. lots
has happened since the release of terranova's internationally
acclaimed debut, "close the door", an album that earned respect
thanks to its unquestionable quality.
the enigmatic, alluring, melancholic, bittersweet and mysterious
has always been terranova's trademark. with "running away", they
continue their move away from an early preference for hiphop,
venturing deeper into the realms of electro pop. those familiar
with terranova mastermind dj fetisch's "interstellar pogo
sessions" (out on !k7) would agree that this berlin club gave
future mix sound possibilities a home.
taking ingredients like hiphop, metal guitar reminiscence, detroit
techno and more elegiac sounds, fetisch whips up a rough essence
to make the more disco orientated audience bounce, week after
week. he creates an urban elegance; he makes you want to party
hard and listen carefully. more attentive listeners will recognize
both a casually but elaborately woven musical thread and fetisch's
ability to challenge sound-structures without loosing the plot.
a sexy sound for intelligent people - or "sonic fiction", as
cultural / media theorist kodwo eshun puts it. but "running away"
is not only the long awaited musical sign of life, it moreover
marks a change in personnel - guitarist jon shapeton comes in for
kaos, who leaves on friendly terms to explore other possibilities.
"running away", which features the great vocals by original
terranova and stereo mcs member cath coffey, gives you an idea
where the new formation is heading. it is an elaboration on the
has-been and look into the will-be, leaving the off-off club and
pop underground ghettos in favour of more contemporary styles;
styles subject to constant change. also innovation; dope beats,
new wave guitars catchy house vocals and sharp synthesizer
frequencies are uncompromisingly blended into an intricate and
unique sound.
remixes by the likes of dj naughty or the stereo mcs are proof
enough that there is an adequate amount of material for other
musicians to work with. the album's (scheduled for fall) musical
range remains difficult to fathom, but it's already being
anticipated as piece of contemporary music history.
