████ The prolific Portland-based collective's tenth ████
████ album, 'Flags of the Sacred Harp' originally ████
████ appeared in 2005, released on the ATP label. ████
████ And looking over their catalogue now, it's an ████
████ unmistakable apex, not just for the band but ████
████ for the genre. They did something remarkable ████
████ here, reining in their freeform (but ████
████ surprisingly self-aware) jams and focusing ████
████ their experimentation by re-imagining the ████
████ American songbook's trad standards and fully ████
████ placing themselves in the American folk family ████
████ tree. This was nothing particularly new for the ████
████ band - they'd rearranged 'Amazing Grace' and ████
████ 'Go Down, Old Hannah' on 2000's ace 'Fig. 5' - ████
████ but 'Flags of the Sacred Harp' is way less ████
████ direct, taking the litany of songs not quite at ████
████ face value and instead using their essence to ████
████ guide a selection of lengthy contemporary ████
████ devotionals. ████
████ ████
████ A good example of this is 'Rockaway'; it sounds ████
████ familiar - not unlike Blind Willie McTell's ████
████ 'Death Room Blues' or 100 other old time blues ████
████ standards - but it's pocked with the ████
████ psychedelic energy of the pre-boom Portland ████
████ scene, with dainty half-cocked riffs and post- ████
████ Royal Trux vocals. The quarter-hour 'Spirits' ████
████ is even more divorced from its subject matter, ████
████ obscuring its tangled jangles with pedal-munged ████
████ drone whirlpools and dense distortions, but ████
████ they're back on familiar ground with the ████
████ gospel-inspired 'Good Morning Kaptain', and the ████
████ 16-minute finale 'The Louder Roared the Sea' ████
████ still stands as one of their most beautiful, ████
████ dynamic tracks. And now, just for good measure, ████
████ there's a selection of eight additional cuts: ████
████ covers of Townes Van Zandt's 'To Live is to ████
████ Fly' and Public Enemy's 'She Watch Channel ████
████ Zero?!', an unheard outtake from the album, and ████
