████ Do not adjust your audio settings. The wobbly, ████
████ wow-and-flutter vibe that you're hearing in the ████
████ opening bars of "Satin Flame" as King King gets ████
████ started is not the sound of your streaming ████
████ setup collapsing. It is, however, the sound of ████
████ two inventive musicians letting you know that ████
████ you're in for an unpredictableùand occasionally ████
████ playfulùjourney. An instrumental joint effort ████
████ between one of the most well-regarded studio ████
████ drummers in L.A. (Waronker, who's played with ████
████ everyone from R.E.M. to Beck) and the producer ████
████ who also runs one of the most interesting ████
████ jazz-adjacent indie labels around (Min, who ████
████ heads up Colorfield Recordings) may not be an ████
████ instantly obvious one, but the results are ████
████ nonetheless incredibly rewarding. Even with the ████
████ collaborative nature of King King and Min's ████
████ powerful sense of dynamics and melody, this is ████
████ still very much a drummer's album. Waronker's ████
████ chops are considerableùafter all, he's not just ████
████ a go-to session player, but also the man tapped ████
████ by Oasis to sit behind the kit for their 2025 ████
████ reunion showsùbut he's also unbound by ████
████ convention. Since his paycheck depends on ████
████ essentially being able to play anything with ████
████ anybody, Waronker's approach here is inherently ████
████ flexible and his magpie tendencies serve the ████
████ music well, allowing him and Min to freely ████
████ explore everything from loping jazz-funk (the ████
████ title track) to psychedelic ambience ("Good ████
████ Times"). Are there drum solos? Should you get ████
████ ready for some "Moby Dick"-style boredom? Well, ████
████ there are some drum-only pieces, like "Big ████
████ Dipper" and "Little Dipper," but they are far ████
████ from being flashy expositions. Instead, the ████
████ spirit of collaboration continues, with Min's ████
████ production atmospherics receding, only to be ████
████ replaced by the percussion contributions of ████
████ Mark Giuliana, who provides both his unique ████
████ sonic signature and some complementary contrast ████
