due to their often somewhat controversial content--strippers,
intimidation and generally oppressive sentiments--most of the
massive attack videos contained within this dvd have hardly ever
been screened. only "unfinished sympathy", "protection" and
"teardrop" are instantly recognisable, the former with its superb
single tracking shot following shara nelson along peico avenue in
los angeles, "protection" with its strange sideways perspectives
and "teardrop" with its award-winning singing foetus. the rest of
the tracks contained on the disc; "be thankful for what you've
got" is the most obviously non-mtv friendly, with its full-frontal
strip show, whereas "safe from harm" and "angel" are just plain
scary, with their menacing chases and bleak urban landscapes
guaranteed to get pulses racing, which is no mean feat considering
they only last five minutes at the most. stephane sednaoui's urban
primitive imagery for "sly", with its garish colours, is a welcome
respite from all the darkness, whereas jonathan glazer's take on
"karmacoma" is just plain unsettling with its sweaty gun-toting
lunatics, bearded oddballs and scary shining-esque corridors,
complete with spooky twins.
every video has something interesting to offer, showcasing a
wealth of talented directors and proving that music videos don't
just have to feature a bunch of dancing polished puppets. the only
complaint is that there are no extras--no interviews with the
directors, or the band, and no commentaries, in fact the dvd
doesn't even have a sleeve--you have to go to the band's website
to download one from a selection--which is either divine
inspiration in a bid to exclude marketing or the ultimate
marketing ploy. but, these are small gripes when faced with the
impressive array of videos on offer. all in all, this is a
fascinating document of the work of one of the uk's most
consistently innovative and creative bands. --helen marquis
