            If you didn't have 'surprise Satanic Warmaster
            release' on your bingo card for 2024, don't worry,
            you're not alone. With a few well-timed social media
            posts, Mr. Werewolf made year-end waves by dropping
            this new release, and the fanfare so far is justified.

            On its surface, Exultation of Cruelty feels like a
            return to the pre-Fimbulwinter era of Satanic
            Warmaster, but this album is both a return of sorts
            and a continuation of what weÆve heard from this
            long-running staple of the Finnish scene.

            From the start of the first track, ôBlack Circle of
            Deathö, weÆre reunited with the more lofi production
            from the CSM-era of the band. Like when Fimbulwinter
            first arrived, this can feel a bit jarring at first,
            but if Mr. Werewolf has shown us anything so far in
            his long career, it is that the music of Satanic
            Warmaster is adaptable, but always distinct. From the
            punk influenced Strength and Honour to the majestic
            and epic Aamongandr, Satanic Warmaster and its creator
            have a deep knowledge of black metal songwriting,
            allowing for success across the genre.

            Exultation of Death, while more raw sounding than the
            last two releases, the scope and grandeur is even more
            expansive than what we saw on Aamongandr. The tracks
            here are lengthy, but never overly long. They shift
            tempos fluidly, ôHarken the Bells of Damnationö storms
            through the bulk of its time before shifting into a
            wonderful mid-tempo stomp around the 3/4 mark of the
            trackùmaking it feel not out of place from a release
            like Opferblut.

            This is a masterful album that speaks for itself,
            possibly explaining its minimal publicizing thus far.
            Where this album succeeds is continuing the evolution
            of Satanic Warmaster, which has always been a vehicle
            that shows deep reverence for the genre, while always
            having a unique and distinct vision.

            This will end up topping many honest year end lists
            and rightfully so.
