with this release in the "dj-kicks" series, stud!o k7 has been
able to realize a dream it has harbored for a long time. by
engaging legendary british hip hop band, the stereo mc's, it has
once again succeeded in signing up a duo that, on the strength of
their previous releases, belongs to the innovators in hip hop
circles. despite the fact that the stereo mc's haven't released a
new album for seven years, tracks such as "connected" or "lost in
music" can still be heard in the clubs and on the radio, and their
fantastic live shows paved the way for other hip hop acts. the
fact that they have set up their own companies is only known by a
few. let's take a look back: the story of the stereo mc's starts
in 1987 when rob birch and nick hallam, who have known each other
since their school days in nottingham, move to london where before
long they found the stereo mc's. influenced by american rap
productions, the stereo's start their own recordings and set up
the label gee street shortly afterwards, with jon baker and dj
richie rich, which very quickly enters into a deal with island
records. "move it" and "what is soul" are the first singles to be
released and the subsequent debut album, "33 45 78", with its
fusion of smoky, slow mo hip hop and film score atmospherics, is
still inspiring to this day. in the years that follow, they are
able to delight audiences all over europe with their excellent
live performances, and in 1990 they release their brilliant second
album, "supernatural". a good reception in parts of america for
the single "elevate my mind" means it takes a detour over the
atlantic, only establishing itself in the british charts after its
success in the states (from here on in with new member, the
vocalist cath coffey). "connected", their last album to date,
follows in 1992, hitting numerous charts all over the world, and
the single bearing the same name is able to parallel this success.
justifiably, the stereo mc's win the best band category at the
1994 brit awards. the years that follow are somewhat less hectic
on the music front for the boys, but they're not resting on their
laurels. they found their own label, response records, and their
own publishing house, spirit songs, which represents finley quaye
amongst others. the biography is rounded off by remixes for
artists such as tricky, terranova and madonna. the stereo mc's
have succeeded in creating their own unique sound like virtually
no other band. their mix, conceived as a "live turntable" set, is
now released in the dj-kicks series. "it's a bit unpolished and
that's exactly how we wanted it to be. we didn't want to make it
too perfect, more of a rough mix that doesn't detract from the
live feeling" declares rob birch about the rationale behind their
mix, which is made up of classics by the ultramagnetic mc's, disco
four and the mike theodore orchestra and contemporary tracks from
bands like red snapper, the herbaliser and freddy fresh. "the
music is very diverse - it all dates from different generations -
but it is nevertheless connected by a tremendously funky basic
quality" remarks rob. the fact that a new stereo's track, "rhino
1-3", is to be found on the cd is only mentioned in passing.
although the stereo mc's don't see themselves as dj's, they had a
great time doing it, and it was quite simply their deep love of
music that brought about this project. "you wanted stereo mc's
dj-kicks, you got stereo mc's dj-kicks" say rob and nick. "thank
     you" says stud!o k7.
