Welcome to the bizarre world of "Indicium de Mortuis" by Immortalis, a
record where nothing is what it seems. This is a death metal album that
channels the spirit of Possessed and Slayer, but it does so in ways that
will befuddle the casual listener. It befuddled me for a while. I
couldnÆt see past the meandering songs and the comparative lack of
speed, aggression and atmospheric tricks. I preferred the simple,
comforting, Autopsy-esque bludgeon of their "My Requiem" demo. I have
since changed my mind. The beauty of "Indicium de Mortuis" is in the
challenge that it sets.
The album resembles many things, but none of them too closely. The
production (courtesy of Andy Classen from Holy Moses) sounds like an
early Dan Swan÷ recording. The vocalist roars like Barney Greenway. The
riffs remind me of Florida death metal (Deicide and Massacre
especially). The eccentric rawness reminds me of the Austrian bands
(e.g., Pungent Stench, Disharmonic Orchestra). None of these comparisons
are exact. You could play this album to five death metal veteran
listeners and they would all find new comparison points. The only
consistency is the interplay between paranoia-inducing Possessed riffs
(i.e., ever-decreasing circles that threaten to reduce the musical space
to a singularity) and evil-as-fuck Slayer riffs (i.e., the kind that
makes you want to raise your arms to the sky in Satanic ceremony).
ôSubordinate Godsö is a great example of this interplay, moving from one
to the other in the opening minute.
This isnÆt a particularly fast or brutal death metal album, but it is
weighty, substantial and balanced. It is disorientating rather than
crushing, similar to the approach that The Chasm have used ever since.
The solos are tasteful and well-placed. The keyboard interludes offer
some added interest (e.g., the middle of "Bleeding Inheritance"). The
album is deep enough to save the best tracks for the second half.
"Voices of Forgotten Souls" is my favourite, sounding like a tighter
version of something from ôSeven Churchesö. "Blasphemous Process"
follows, with some creepy avant-garde openings (also containing the
album's best solo). The only disappointment is the cover of Venom's
"Countess Bathory", which feels retrograde and out of place on such a
forward-thinking record.
"Indicium de Mortuis" is brilliant, but requires concerted effort and
attention. Don't be fooled by the spooky, occult cover art. The music
doesnÆt emit that kind of vibe (unlike the first Therion and Tiamat
albums, for instance). Instead, see this album as a ôHouse of
Leavesö-style experience, a spiral staircase leading to the unknown. The
result is some of the most adventurous and fluid death metal of its
time. It deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Demilich and
(early) At the Gates. I will go out on a limb and call this an
unexpected death metal classic. No exaggeration.
