▓████▓▌ In the summer of 2000 with a sell out tour and a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ remix of "On The Beach" in the charts Chris Rea was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ told he was suffering from an illness that would ▓▌
▓████▓▌ end his career and possibly his life. Whilst lying ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in hospital he realised that he had not made his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ final album and wanted a work that he could be ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ judged on. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Set for release in September, "Dancing Down the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Stony Road" is that album. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "If I get through this," thought Chris, "I'm going ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to write the album to go on my headstone if ▓▌
▓████▓▌ something terrible should happen. The influences ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that got me in to music are what I want emphasised ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ on this album." ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Following his lengthy road to recovery he headed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ off to Miraval studios in Provence where he had ▓▌
▓████▓▌ previously recorded some of his biggest albums and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ set to work on the production of what is perhaps ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his most heartfelt project to date and perhaps most ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ surprisingly, a blues album. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Given everything that I had gone through I felt if ▓▌
▓████▓▌ anyone had a right to make a blues album it was ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ me." ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ It was the first blues album Chris had ever ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recorded and charts the roots of both his own ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical style and the development of the blues from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ its Mississippi roots up to the industrial ▓▌
▓████▓▌ heartland of the north. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ In many ways Chris always meant to record blues ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tracks at the outset of his career but in the same ▓▌
▓████▓▌ way as fate had him becoming a vocalist when he ▓▌
▓████▓▌ didn't see himself as one, the speed of his success ▓▌
▓████▓▌ put his original writing style on hold. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Although setting him on the road to huge sales of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 25 million albums Chris' original Grammy nominated ▓▌
▓████▓▌ hit "Fool (if you think it's over)" was released at ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the height of punk and gave him in his own words a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "tie and cardigans" image. Yet the original version ▓▌
▓████▓▌ as written by Chris was written with Al Green in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mind and his vocal style was influenced by the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ emotional pain of the blues great Charley Patton. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "It wasn't just his voice," explains Chris, "but ▓▌
▓████▓▌ also on those early blues records the sound of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ bottleneck or slide guitar which gave true ▓▌
▓████▓▌ expression. I immediately went and bought a blues ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ guitar." ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ With the gathering of his musicians at Miraval most ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of whom had worked together with Chris for many ▓▌
▓████▓▌ years, the expectation was high. This was only ▓▌
▓████▓▌ added to further with a gathering of accordions, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Madagascan bass players and banjo players. In many ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ways it was a menagerie of blues exponents. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Together they embarked on the problem of creating ▓▌
▓████▓▌ an album with state of the art technology yet ▓▌
▓████▓▌ giving it "a homespun back-lot studio feel of ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ Louisville or Memphis." ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The result is as emotional as it is the defining ▓▌
▓████▓▌ album of Chris' career. Achieving all he set out to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ achieve over two discs with all the key moments in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ it's creation being captured for a forthcoming TV ▓▌
▓████▓▌ documentary and DVD release. ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ ▓▌

▓████▓▌ rails. The words are about the massive spirit of ▓▌
   ▓████▓▌ blues/gospel, reaching across the airwaves to a ▓▌
