▌ ░ ▐ habits of chillout collections and their attendant ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ fodder bands or the milking-well-beyond-the-quota of the ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ whole Ibiza thing, labelling a new set the album of the ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ season can often sound like damning it with faint praise ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ these days. However (and it is a big however), all this ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ goes without taking into account Morcheeba. ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'Charango' is Morcheeba album number four and, even if ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ there wasn't anything else remarkable about it, it ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ neatly illustrates how the Cheebas have reduced and ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ reduced their own sublime take on studied hip-hop beats, ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ lazy country breaks and breathy vocalizing down to its ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ most essential elements. But there's more to 'Charango' ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ than simply the summation of six years work. Known best ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ of all for their downbeat strokes, the Cheebas also have ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ a healthy liking for rap and who better than Slick Rick ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ to add the original flava to 'Women Lose Weight' whilst ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ also debunking the myth that Morcheeba only do advert ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ soundbeds. Similarly, Pace Won broadens the vibe on 'Get ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Along' and the album's title track. The advent of ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ Lambchop's Kurt Wagner on 'What New York Couples Fight ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ About' adds a painterly counterpoint to the hip-hop ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ angle, underscoring Morcheeba's songwriting strengths ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ and moving the set in another direction. Throughout ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ 'Charango', it's evident that Morcheeba are firing on ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ all creative levels, exploring their famous sense of ▌ ░ ▐
▌ ░ ▐ humour as much as their famous sense of drama whilst ▌ ░ ▐
