| Just to prove that EMF were a diverse band with many different |
| influences, the guitarist has headed off into the world of Folk |
| with Whistler and frontman, James Atkin, has brought us some |
| strange Dance music in the form of Bentley Rhythm Ace and now |
| Cooler. |
| |
| Disco Sucks, as you might imagine, is a song about how much |
| Disco sucks... to a Disco beat. It's damn good though. |
| |
| Trying to describe Cooler, I have found, is a very difficult |
| task so I think the best thing to do is leave you with the |
| sampled intro of b-side, Above the Gods: "Anyone who has ever |
| taken a few quiet moments to watch the graceful and almost |
| effortless flight of the seagull might want to know what an |
| open mic picks up at 900 miles per hour. Well, it sounds like |
| this..." 8/10 |

| Band Biography: |
| |
| Cooler are Oliver Cherer and James Atkin, a former studio |
| partnership turned live breakbeat/techno band. |
| |
| Cooler came to the attention of Polydor records via a white |
| label released earlier this year under the name Cola via their |
| own imprint Sola. The A & R bidding ensued, Cola attracted |
| interest from credible dance labels such as Island, V2, Junior |
| Boys Own and Astralwerks (Chemical Brothers' US label). They |
| signed with Polydor earlier this year. |
| |
| James was formerly the lead singer of EMF, but was working with |
| Oliver on remixes whilst he was still in EMF. When the band |
| split, Oliver and James decided to become a serious act thus |
| Cola was born. |
| |
| As well as producing their own material, Cooler continue to do |
| remix work for artists such as Adamski and Rare. Their latest |
| remix was for Creation's Hurricane #1 and appears on two |
| formats on their Top 30 single, "Chain Reaction." |
| |
| James is currently a member of Bentley Rhythm Ace's live band. |
| Cooler have just finished a support slot with the Bentley's |
| where they incorporated live musicians; drummer Tud from |
| Menswe@r and former EMF bassist Derry. It rocked... |
| |
| After the first tour that we did supporting BRA the line-up |
| changed. Mark DeCloedt and Anna Haigh replaced Tud and Derry on |
| drums and bass. Mark used to play drums for EMF and Anna has |
| sung with Flowered Up, Dub Pistols, Red Snapper, Chelsea Grin |
| and others both on record and on tour. She appeared in Flowered |
| Up's classic long form video "Weekender" as "The E Queen". |
| |
| Unfortunately Mark only lasted one show and was temporarily |
| replaced by the returning Tud. When Tud was unable to make a |
| show one night, the band went ahead and performed without a |
| drummer. |
| |
| During this period Cooler left their record company and went |
| back into the studio to write new material and rehearse a new |
| band with a new outlook. The first results went on show at The |
| Monarch in Camden, London on the 4th March 1999. The new line |
| up, featuring James on keyboards, samples, bass and vocals, |
| Anna on bass and vocals and Ollie on keyboards, drums and |
| theremin, stormed a packed house. The whole room was "stupidly |
| rocking" from the front of the stage to the back wall. This gig |
| was the perfect end to a week during which Cooler's new record, |
| "Supersod" had been Steve Lamacq's single of the week, (BBC |
| Radio 1). The success continues with this week's single of the |
| week in NME and articles, interviews etc. appearing in |
| subsequent issues of NME and Melody Maker. |
| |
| Cooler are shortly to tour with Fuzz Townshend and will be |
| returning to the studio to record the follow up to "Supersod", |
| entitled "Disco Sux". |
| |
| Cooler disbanded in early 2000. |
