███▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ - RELEASE NOTES - ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀███
█░ ░█
█░ "In a Pop Idol style contest to audition cutting edge ░█
█░ electronic musicians, the North London pair Simon Leonard ░█
█░ and David Baker (aka Komputer) would not be the obvious ░█
█░ bets. They are not bald guys from Central Europe; they have ░█
█░ a colourful past as purveyors of avant-synth music laced ░█
█░ with wry humour; they enjoy a good East End pub singalong ░█
█░ around a piano. Yet for the second time in half a decade ░█
█░ Komputer have made one of the year's most brilliantly ░█
█░ scintillant and earnestly playful electronic albums. ░█
█░ 'Market Led' follows 1998's 'The World Of Tomorrow', the ░█
█░ debut Komputer opus, which introduced the pair to adherents ░█
█░ of guitarless music as guardians of the Kraftwerk flame. ░█
█░ "The World Of Tomorrow" took the mid '70s purist synth pop ░█
█░ of the neon city soundscapers and transplanted it to North ░█
█░ London. A re-interpretation and a celebration of the ░█
█░ Dusseldorf instigator's music, it managed to please serious ░█
█░ devotees of Ralf and Florian as well as introducing the ░█
█░ updated synth aesthetic to newcomers. ░█
█░ The interval between 'The World Of Tomorrow' and 'Market ░█
█░ Led' saw David and Simon fast-forward through several ░█
█░ evolutionary stages to arrive at the new sound of Komputer. ░█
█░ Following through with their re-investigations of synth pop, ░█
█░ they made a further two albums of man-machine music, ░█
█░ locating one in the '80s and another in the '90s, but ░█
█░ decided against releasing them." -Mute.com blip ░█
█░ ░█
█░ "This heavy emphasis on technology is contradicted though ░█
█░ by the surprisingly organic approach to sampling that ░█
█░ Leonard and Baker demonstrate. The album title, 'Market ░█
█░ Led', alludes to this idea. As day jobs, the duo assemble ░█
█░ and disassemble the stalls at London's Spitalfields Market, ░█
█░ giving them random access to a myriad of abandoned vinyl ░█
█░ from the day's trading. This has allowed them to incorporate ░█
█░ anything from '70s glam rock to some obscure dub thing' into ░█
█░ 'Market Led'. On the track 'Kompaktor' they even sample a ░█
█░ rubbish compactor at work - not something that would crop up ░█
█░ on your average Gareth Gates record! ░█
█░ The sonic invention and trickery on 'Market Led' is at times ░█
█░ quite refreshing. 'Gaps' is composed mainly from the samples ░█
█░ of dramatic musical drops / pauses of a few '70s hits, and ░█
█░ has a strange, otherworldly texture to it. ░█
█░ The undoubted star of the show though is 'Mum', where all of ░█
█░ Leonard and Bakers' ambition crystallises perfectly. ░█
█░ Hypnotically wistful, mournful chimes rock back and forth ░█
█░ over spitting, metronomic percussion, to startling effect. ░█
█░ 'Joanna' is worthy of a mention too, with its' schizophrenic ░█
█░ shift from foreboding, storm cloud thuds to light, sun ░█
█░ drenched beats." -MusicOMH.com blip ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Definitely something new from Komputer, nicely straying ░█
█░ from their past as a "tribute band", tipping their ░█
█░ collective hats towards the far past (Kraftwerk started ░█
█░ making their magik back in the early '70s). Now with more ░█
█░ samples instead of synths, as noted in the above review. ░█
█░ The CD sleeve has pics of the "notable source" for the track, ░█
█░ with the track name at the bottom - buy the CD and you'll see. ░█
