▓████▓▌ Montreal-born pianist Oscar Peterson became the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Verve Records house pianist after label president ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Norman Granz introduced him at a Jazz at the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Philharmonic concert in the late 1940s. Peterson ▓▌
▓████▓▌ subsequently found himself backing, among others, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ saxophonists Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, and Stan ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Getz, as well as vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Billie ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ In 1952, Peterson found solo fame leading an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ unusual trio with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Barney Kessel -- later replaced by Herb Ellis. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ After Ellis' departure in 1958, the pianist formed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his pacesetting Oscar Peterson Trio with Brown and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ drummer Ed Thigpen. All were virtuosos in their own ▓▌
▓████▓▌ right, and they made the Trio a simply astonishing ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ensemble. (And each member continued to do great ▓▌
▓████▓▌ work after the trio's breakup in 1965, with Brown ▓▌
▓████▓▌ working as a manager whose clients included the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Modern Jazz Quartet and Quincy Jones, as well a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ releasing a series of popular albums for the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Concord Jazz and Telarc labels. On Verve, Thigpen ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recorded Out of the Storm, a progressive date that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ explored the nontraditional potential of the drums ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and has since become an honored percussionist and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ jazz educator.) ▓▌
▓████▓▌ To call an album The Sound of the Trio may have ▓▌
▓████▓▌ betrayed a hint of arrogance, but it encompasses so ▓▌
▓████▓▌ much unadulterated, ferocious brilliance that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Peterson's Trio surely earned its place as the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ standard-bearer for a popular configuration. These ▓▌
▓████▓▌ live 1961 dates are drawn from Peterson's famed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recordings from Chicago's London House, where ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Peterson and company frequently appeared. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Although Peterson was better known as an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ interpreter than as a composer, The Sound includes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his original number "Thag's Dance," a rumbling, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ truncated, uptempo theme that becomes a soloist's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ showcase marked by Peterson's aggressive salvos, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Brown's witty riffs and sharp snare statements from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Thigpen, to whom the song was dedicated. And the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ extended concert take of the Peterson-penned ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Kadota's Blues" demonstrates how his swinging, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ceaselessly inventive blues licks could form the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ perfect blend of the visceral and the cerebral. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ With the Harold Arlen melody "Ill Wind," Peterson ▓▌
▓████▓▌ shows a thoroughgoing exploitation of a romantic ▓▌
▓████▓▌ theme for all its potential as a grand production ▓▌
▓████▓▌ number, while still allowing him to run ▓▌
▓████▓▌ improvisationally amok, alternating hard swing with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sexily rhapsodic passages. "On Green Dolphin ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Street" shows Peterson at his most lavishly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ cinematic, crafting a curlicued overture over ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Brown's sonorous arco bass, only to transform the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ melody with a swinging tempo -- and managing to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ toss in quick quotes from "Tenderly" and "Satin ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Doll" as he goes. The album concludes with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Peterson's beaming, bounding version of folk song ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Billy Boy," treated with a revival-show exuberance ▓▌
