If you're getting weary traveling through the Americana
and folk territories, then there's a welcome respite up
ahead in the shape of The Hotel Alexis - all major credit
cards accepted... The working title of singer-songwriter
Sidney Alexis, The Hotel Alexis make gorgeously textured
music that looks to its American heritage for primary
influence, but is just as happy pulling in strands of
Elliot Smith, Amandine et al. to help round out the
vision. His second full length, 'Goliath, I'm On Your
Side' is a much more mature piece of work than that which
has come before, as Alexis brings a psych-burned outlook
to bear on the songs contained within. Evidently a fan of
Sparklehorse, 'Goliath, IÆm On Your Side' opens with the
twanging tones of 'Soft Soft War' - wherein a lilting and
elegant composition is fragranced even further by the
harmony-fed vocals. Sounding not unlike Andrew Kenny of
American Analog Set, Alexis has that special ability to
seem simultaneously fragile and steroid strong, with his
honey-dipped voice gliding around the lush
instrumentation to knob-on effect. Stood between Wilco
and The Velvet Underground, next track 'San Diego
Backslide' cunningly unites the smoked ambience of
after-hours lap-steel with the gritty profile of New
York, as synths fill its sails with a weightless gusto.
Elsewhere, 'Suddenly, It's You & Me' removes any
extraneous elements for a crushingly intimate tale of
lost friends, 'Hummingbird/Indian Dog' is an epic of
Tolstoy proportions that manages to hit the twenty minute
mark with Animal Collective-esque aplomb, whilst 'Oh, The
Loneliness' evokes daydreams through reverb drenched
flourishes that overlap to perfection.
