Abraded is an extreme metal band hailing from
Cleveland Ohio. Formed very recently in 2018.
Featuring current members from Hemdale who are legends
in the deathgrind and grindcore scene.
In terms of describing this demo sonically and
musically. Is that it's nothing short of disgustingly
nasty old school death metal. With a big death grind
influence thrown into the mix. This demo in particular
features current members of Inoculation (who would
later leave Abraded). But instead of being a
technically proficient OSDM band. What you get is 14
minutes of grindy death metal obliteration. It's a
short but sweet listen. That doesn't feel too short to
where certain sections and riffs are rushed. Or parts
that don't feel properly explored. These songs are
intense, filthy, and very intense. It truly feels like
something that was recorded in the early '90s.
especially the production quality.
The guitars on this demo make up a bulk of what makes
this release so damn enjoyable. Not only are these
songs short but sweet as I mentioned earlier. But
goddamn are these songs catchy and groovy. There's a
lot of mid-paced chugging going on in a majority of
these songs. The lead work in a song like "Veracity of
Disease" is very old school. Diving, squealing, and
shredding. "Entranced in Halucinosis" has this really
meaty palm muted chug section complemented by some
double bass. Which makes the song extra brutal. The
riffs across the board are just very memorable. And
easy to latch on to.
What would a grindy death metal release be like
without any tremolo riffs? Well, there's nothing to
fear. Because Abraded has you covered. These tremolo
riffs grab you by the throat and are relentless. A lot
of them are introduced to elevate the tempo. Followed
by blast beats or d-beats. Regardless they're crunchy
and fun. What this band also throws in are these
really cool crawling riffs. Songs like "The Bogwitch"
and "An Act Of Cruelty" have these really cool
Cannibal Corpse-like crawls. There's also heavy
Autopsy vibes across this demo as well. In the slower
doomier riffs.
The drumming on this release is played in classic
death grind fashion. Fast, aggressive, and in your
face. The drums are incredibly blistering in
intensity. Beating you over the head with tons of
blast beats and slow gut-punching double bass grooves.
The constant punky d-beats are a staple of this demo
as well. Because they're everywhere on this release.
They do a good job of following the guitars and their
non-stop brutality. Cymbal crashes, constant stomping,
and breakdowns appear frequently on this release as
well. While the performance isn't the tightest. Who
cares? This is filthy death grind. The sloppy yet
powerful attack of the drums makes this release raw
and primitive.
But then you have the vocals on this demo. The vocals
are absolutely disgusting. Usually sticking to 2
ranges on all these songs. First, you have these
trademark death growls and grunts. Then you have the
pitch-shifted snarls and gutturals. This adds a whole
new layer of filth and putrid flavor to this demo.
Nick Nedley does a good job of balancing these two
ranges so that they both get equal time to shine. But
be honest who doesn't enjoy a good ol pitch-shifted
gurgle or scream? And to make it better the production
gives them an extra cavernous atmosphere. Making them
even more filthy. I love it.
Finally, we have the production to talk about. As I
mentioned with the vocals. There's a tinge of reverb
to the more pitch-shifted gutturals and screams. The
regular growls sit perfectly in the front. They sound
as obnoxious as they should be. As for the drums.
They're equally as destructive. The snare drum, kick
drum, and cymbals are very stripped down. And most
importantly they're thick and loud. The same can be
said for the guitars and bass. The tones are old
school dirty. Which an extra bit of grit and crunch to
make each riff hit like a brick to the head. The
production perfectly captures that OSDM sound.
Overall. This is a very solid and enjoyable piece of
death grind. It's quick, hateful, and very heavy. If
you're looking for a blunt beatdown of deathgrind.
That kicks down your door, beats the shit out of you,
and leaves as fast as it entered. Abraded is up your
alley. Highly recommend this to any death metal and
grindcore fan.
