German bass player Alois Kott is known for being an untiring
inventor of such extraordinary bands as Blue Box, Contact Trio
and Jungle Pilots. Instead of doing it the safe way, this
'sound professor' is always looking out for new talent on the
scene and starting unheard-of projects that aim at surprising
mixtures and not at mainstream receipts. Says a critic: "In his
wrist and fingertips, Kott has at his disposal the development
of jazz from Ornette Coleman to punk jazz and funk." Kott
studied double bass, guitar, and electronic composition, but is
best known for his funky riffs on the electric bass. With his
different bands, he did a dozen or so recordings, toured South
America, South East Asia, and Australia, and performed on many
of the major festivals such as Berlin, Montreux, Bombay,
Istanbul, and Skopje.
It was on a trip to Amsterdam when Kott heard two youngsters
play in the streets that impressed him immediately with their
natural attitude to the fresh and adventurous. Soon afterwards
the three of them began to work on a band concept and came up
with Greenfish - a swinging, urban, vital, eclectical trio
music crossing the borders between progressive rock and
Knitting Factory sounds. Pushed by Holger Zehrt's individual
drum grooves and featuring Lars Petzold's unpredictable guitar
out front, Greenfish easily touches realms that were opened up
by the likes of Elliott Sharp, David Torn, Robert Fripp, and
Eugene Chadbourne.
"Perfumed Light, Singing Blue" should definitely turn the heads
of those longing for fun and adventure in music. With the
addition of experimental sound colors and even a string
quartet, this CD debut is also a true homage to the dadaistic
spirit of Swiss painter, sculptor, and poet Hans Arp whose
works inspired the compositions.
