inspired by john peel, engineered for bjork, collaborated with
avant-gardist jon hassell, djed for u2, hung out with william
burroughs, produced guitar legend ry cooder, recorded with pulp.
oh, and released stuff on mo' wax (and then started his own label
for good measure). frankly, it sounds like the work of ten men.
he's a scottish livewire called howard bernstein. but you can call
     him howie b.

cutting his studio chops with bands as diverse as swing out sister
and the banshees, he's subsequently worked with a stellar cast of
artists (tricky, major force, u2, the band's robbie robertson),
while embarking on a solo career that has so far yielded four
albums, the most recent of which is 'folk'.

as a dj, he's gone from glasgow youth clubs to playing reggae at
the africa centre (as part of soul ii soul's legendary nights
there in the eighties) through to u2's behemoth pop world tour.
howie's take on this cockamamie world we call dance music,
however, is about breaking down the barriers; one where the dj
booth is on the same level as the dancefloor, and where the dancer
(or listener) is on the same level as the disc-slinger. a dance
     democracy.

the mix you are presently listening to (or, indeed, are just about
to) manages to incorporate punk rock jerkiness with the heart of a
soul boy. there are, of course, some tunes you may have heard
before, such as love unlimited orchestra's genre-defining 'love's
theme' or blackbyrd's rare-groover 'walking in rhythm'. they are
surrounded by the obscure, the strangely familiar, the laidback,
the funky, the trippy, the uplifting and, moreover, the damn fine.

where else would you hear curtis mayfield (whose 'summer hot' is
culled from his underrated honesty lp) nestling near to gong, the
daftly brilliant french band prone to singing about flying
teapots? or, for that matter, who would put maze's pioneering
piece of electronica, 'twilight', close to howie's own take on
'under the boardwalk', a melon-twisting distant cousin to the
drifters' original? and yet somehow it all works.

now whose turn was it to get the rizlas?
