The origins of the novelty song, at least on the British side of the
Atlantic, lie in the music-hall tradition which began in the mid-Victorian
era. Music hall consisted of a mixture of comedy, popular songs, variety
entertainment and specialty acts. The twentieth century brought a new
generation of music-hall performers. These included Harry Champion with
songs such as "Boiled Beef And Carrots", George Formby, accompanied by his
ukulele with "When I'm Cleaning Windows" and many more included here on
this excellent 3 disc compilation, guaranteed to raise a smile!
