Matt Cooper and Andreas Allen, AKA Outside, return with their third
album Discoveries.
The first Outside album Almost In was released on Dorado in 1993,
hailed by The Face as 'Rich and rewarding', it featured Vannessa
Simon, Rob Galliano and Cleveland Watkiss, with Matt Cooper taking
care of the Production, Engineering and Mixing as well as playing
keyboards and drums. It was a lot to take on for a 20-year-old,
although you wouldn't know from the result. But, for Outside's
second album,The Rough And The Smooth, Matt enlisted Andreas Allen,
an LA based sound engineer and also in his very early 20's, to help
him pull it together. Described as 'The best album of the last 2
years' by Mixmag, it even caught the attention of the legendary
Tommy Lipuma, who immediately snapped it up for the USA and his
recently re-formed Blue Thumb Label (along with NuYorican Soul). A
lengthy period of international touring and promotion followed the
release of The Rough And The Smooth in 1995, until the studio
beckoned them once again.
Discoveries is a concept album. It's the soundtrack to an epic
journey of discovery through space and the next millenium; if only
Star Trek sounded this good! Matt and Andreas have together created
a deep and uplifting soundscape aided by Byron Wallen on Trumpet,
David Jean Baptiste on Clarinet, and Tony Smith on guitar. Check it
on a road trip, on your snowboard, or roll a fat one and blast off.
Don't miss the single Finding ALH84001 as it features a superb
remix from Ashley Beedle. "It's the best mix I've ever done", he
said, and it's currently in the box of everyone from Paul Trouble
Anderson to Gilles Peterson.
