Departure Chandelier are a band that have made a huge name for
themselves in the black metal world, recently they release a precious
demo that has never been heard before. Time to get stuck into this piece
of the bands history dated back to 2010.
Mystical synths introduce the demo setting the embracing ambience
beautifully, shrouded in dark secrets and mystery. Raw guitars, pounding
drums and stunning synths drive out a fierce yet melancholic
instrumental force with bleak howls soon joining in. There is definitely
a more depressive element than on the recent full length, however this
is still not tame, it is backed with bite and an all encompassing
atmosphere that is assisted by rivetingly tight songwriting though
incredibly simplistic in nature.
Though the release is a short thirteen minutes and two of the four
pieces are an intro and outro, there is a feeling of completion to the
demo as the bulk of the music is in the two middle songs, both offering
a raw assault of hellishly intense black metal of a scathing nature that
rips through ambient and charnel passages gorgeously. It is a real treat
to be exposed to a long forgotten Departure Chandelier release that we
never even knew existed, giving more insight into the bands early
inception and growth.
This monolith of Napoleonic aggression delivers some intriguing groove,
icy ambience and chilling musicianship, truly magnificent in
presentation. A basic production style works wonders with the more
stripped-back songwriting to really allow the pieces to grow in a
natural manner. The introduction and outro are not obnoxiously long,
rather just building and tapering out the two fantastic tracks and
softening the blow of barbaric extremity. The outro is wonderfully
estranged, ending the demo in a spectacle of odd samples and synths that
really leave you wanting more, so if you have not heard the bands other
material, check that out too!
Departure Chandelier, while shrouded in mystery have given us a little
taster of their early days that certainly prove to be excellent. Though
they have definitely improved and grown over the last decade, this
release is absolutely worth delving into and has the potential to haunt
you with its dark, eerie soundscapes.
---
There is something weird going on with this band. First, they released a
demo in 2011 and did nothing for the next 6 years. After that, they
contributed to a shady split (according to the archives, it was released
in 2017, but the other band's material was recorded in 2018???) with
songs that god knows when were recorded. If that wasn't weird enough,
they managed to put out one of my favorite black metal records last year
in the form of a full-length that was recorded 9 years earlier. Now,
just when I thought their secret stash of synth-soaked black metal has
run dry, they put out another demo which also happens to be recorded in
2010, a year before their first release.
The fucked up chronology aside, the demo delivers the same formula that
their other one had. Two instrumentals (intro and outro) and two black
metal pieces filled with sinister melodies and atmosphere. The intro has
the usual Departure Chandelier qualities. Eerie synth gives you the
feeling of entering a place of ancient evil or walking through a misty
cemetery and the addition of the church bells and the fainting choir
reinforces this. The outro, on the other hand, paints the picture that
the title suggests so well, it's almost scary.
Between This World and the Next is the first actual song on the record
but it sure as hell blasts everything else out of the water. The harsh,
repetitive first riff serves as the core of the song's atmosphere before
getting followed up by its more melodic counterparts. The keyboards are
heavily used but despite being outstandingly executed, they don't stand
out as much as the church choir does. It's a fantastic touch, but the
black metal vocals are even better. They range from fainting grunts to
horrifying howls and unlike on their full-length, the vocals are in your
face mixing-wise. The One Still to Come also has most of these elements,
but it takes an even more aggressive approach and switches the choir's
deep and ominous voice, to slightly higher-pitched one. The only thing I
could complain about is the drums. More often than not, they sound weak
and they get drowned out by the other instruments, but that's the only
issue I have with the record.
If you are familiar with the band's previous works, you already know
what to expect. They didn't reinvent themselves, but they didn't need
to, and despite the brief length of the record (13 minutes and a half),
it almost managed to match the quality of their full-length. I don't
know what else the band has hidden in their basement, but I would love
to see more of this.
The highlights of the album are "Intro (Corrupt Saints of Notre Dame)",
"Between This World and the Next" and "The One Still to Come".
