Release Notes
-------------
Jack Cooke has been playing bluegrass for 37 years in the same
band, the iconic Clinch Mountain Boys.
On Sittin' on Top of the World, he steps out from behind his
bass fiddle to lead a talented ensemble of old friends through a
batch of traditional tunes. There's nothing revolutionary about
the band's approach to bluegrass, but it's a pleasure to hear it
handled so skillfully.

Produced by country-bluegrass hero Jim Lauderdale, Sittin' on
Top of the World crackles with energy, whether the song is a
midtempo ballad such as Lauderdale's "That's How the Cookie
Crumbles" or a jaunty traditional ditty such as the opening
"Gotta Travel On."
The core members of Cooke's studio band are fellow members of
the Clinch Mountain Boys: Ralph Stanley on rhythm guitar and
harmonies and Steve Sparkman on banjo.

On most of the songs, they are augmented by the presence of
Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, with brother Robbie McCoury handling
banjo on "Dark Hollow" and Bill Monroe's frisky "On and On."
Another McCoury Band member, Jason Carter, plays fiddle.
Yet another high-profile guest, David Grisman, adds a tasty
mandolin solo to the title track, which also features some lead
vocals from Stanley.
Sonically, Lauderdale has created an album that emphasizes the
beautiful sound of the acoustic instruments. Especially rich is
the influence of Carter's fiddle, which sounds sweet and full on
his melodic solo in "Long Black Veil."
That song, like the others, isn't twisted in any ambitious new
directions, but in the hands of Cooke and his talented band, the
old one is just fine, thanks very much.
