The Shamen - digitally remastered with new liner notes.
All tracks written by Angus/Shamen, except 3 written by
Sin/Shamen, 8 written by Stephenson/Samen.
Published by Amokshasong
Tracks 1 - 7 1989, track 8 P 1998

Recording Kevin Patterson,
except 8 - Recording - Brian Pugsley
Original Sleeve Design - Rogan Jeans
Track 8 taken from "Jesus Loves Amerika" Calc 069

Now ten years old and digitally remastered, this mini-album was
the last chance to capture the Shamen as an indie rock outfit
before their pop/techno crossover songs that made them famous
took over. Having said that the changes were in an advanced
stage as a lot of the songs are reworked rather than remixed,
but their unmistakable sound was emerging. It starts with a
revamped version of You Me And Everything and continues with
Splash 2, which is a much more developed electronic event than
the earlier songs with plenty of lo-fi samples from radio/TV
broadcasts. This is basically a non-commercialised piece
similar to their well-known style. The remix of Reraptyouare is
straight out of the acid club culture and many miles from the
original. There is bonus track called Darkness in Zion, but
only has a running time of two min. This album has to be seen
as the transition between the indie rock straight sounds and
the acid house that lead to their first rave anthem Move Any
Mountain. Phoward is a fascinating look back to observe the
developments of a band that brought the mainstream listeners
into the ravers' clubhouse. (Phil Brook)

Nineteen eighty-nine was a busy year for The Shamen.
Perhaps this was why it would also be their last year as one of
post-Acid House sampladelia's best-kept secrets, as the rose
from clubland's underground to emerge as one of the
country's most innovative and popular experimental
rock/dance fusion combos.

First, there was the release of their second album,
In Gorbachov We Trust, in January. Within three months, there
was a single, their eight, called ' You Me & Everything'
(described by main man Colin Angus as "our
ill-fated minor pop classic; a too self-conscious move back
towards pop, even if it was still very sequenced, very
techno"),
backed with a remix of "Reraptyoure". Then, a month later,
Phorward, originally a mini-album compromising eight tracks,
hit
the shops, The Shamen's last release before signing on the
dotted line with One Little Indian that summer.

"It was basically just me and Will [Sinnott/Sin, Angus' late
partner in rhyme] deciding to make some dosh so we could
get some more of the equipment we needed," said Colin of
Phorward, tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Phorward was, of course, so much more than a means for the
dynamic electro-duo to acquire new techno-gadgetry. It
represented the most unequivocal pledge of allegiance to
date on the part of The Shamen to UK clubland and its
attendant music and culture. Within seconds of the
scratched-up rhythm of "You Me & Everything (Else) - a
remake/remodel of the recent single - it occured that this
band bore virtually no relation to the psychadelic indie-rock
group who, just two years before, had recorded Drop.

Essentially a prototype for Paul Oakenfold's drastic surgery on
Happy Mondays' menacingly slow and heavy "Hallelujah" six
months down the line, this revamp of "You, Me & Everything"
was a signal track in a year in which dance and rock cultures
merged like never before. As much as the Mondays and The
Stone Roses, The Shamen were responsible for white kids
getting into rave, E and freaky dancing. They wre by accident
and osmosis involved in the promotion of black music to a
crowd who ordinarily wouldn't have been interested.

Final proof of just how far The Shamen had progressed since
their debut album was the '89 update on Phorward of
"Strange Days Dream" (originally on Drop), re-titled "SDD 89".
Where before the song was a retro affair that could have
been lifted from some obscure collection of 60s psychadelic
freakbeats on the Bam Caruso label, now it was a riot of Acid
House squelches and squiggles and frenetic techno clatter.

The band sneakily offered them "Happy Days" (originally
recorded for their 1986 debut EP, "They May Be Right...But
They Certainly Aren't Wrong") and, assuming it to be just the
kind of buoyabt drop ditty they needed to TV-advertise their
beer, McEwans agreed to use it, unaware of the song's anti-
Tory component. When McEwans found out, via the Glasgow
Evening Times, they withdrew the campaign, at an alleged
cost of one million pounds.

Elsewhere on Phorward there were "Splash 2" (with its
ominous radio/TV voices sounding as though they'd been
phoned in from some war-torn hellhole), the crushingly heavy
"Negation State" and the title track - another Acid-inspired
basstastic squelchfest with all traced of The Shamen's rock
band past eletronically eradicated.

With such phorward-looking music in their repertoire now, it
| only remained for The Shamen to bring their stag | By winter '89, DJs and laser beams were par for the course at |
Shamen gigs. During the spring of 1990, the band enjoyed
their first residency, at London's T&C 2 Club, where, as Record
collector magazine described, "a barrage of psychotropic
effects were used to recreate the psychadelic experience,
which was the origina aim of the 13th Floor Elevators - to
make music that was enjoyable while under the influence of
mind-expanding drugs, and also to create an environment for
others that may alter the consciousness".

As the writers of these sleeve notes explained in Melody
Maker, after witnessing The Shamen in full effect at Berlin's
prestigious Quatier Club in summer '90, these Synergy
all-nighters were "equal parts US West Coast pop art experi-
ment, Swinging 60s Happening and Acid House race."
Helping to push the punters into fantasy-land was The
Shamen's Virtual Reality equipment (and this, a full half-
decade before the notion of interactive entertainment
became widely recognised) which allowed users to disappear
into a fictional, computer-animated world. Will Sin was partic-
ularly excited about the potential of Virtual Reality.

"Imagine a Synergy show at some time in the future," he
enthused, "where everyone's in Virtual Reality gear - instead
of having to deck out the hall or whatever, we'll have
generated completely alternative 'realities' for everyone, who
will be receiving their own version of reality on receptors.
You
won't even need to leave your home!"

Although Phorward didn't have too much impact on the
national charts, it marked a turning point in
The Shamen's career - a period of transition for a band
arguably more open to change than any other of their
generation. Within two years, they would release two
groundbreaking albums in En-Tact (November, 1990) and Boss
Drum (September, 1992) and they would be Top 40 regulars
with dancepop anthems like "Move Any Mountain", "Love Sex
Intelligence" and, of course, "Ebeneeter Goode", making them
the most cemmercially succesfull consciousness-raising
avant-disco polemicists in the business.

The only shame was that synth'n'sampling king Will Sinnott
wouldn't be there to enjoy it..
