His name is David Mancuso. He had a profound influence on DJs such
as Tony Humphries, Francois Kerkovian, Frankie Knuckles, Larry
Levan, David Morales, Larry Patterson, Nicky Siano and Danny
Tenaglia. His loft formula, which dates back to 1970, has inspired
the Tenth Floor, the Gallery, the Soho, Reade Street, the Paradise
Garage and the Warehouse. Yet for all of the countless column
inches dedicated to the history of the American DJ, Mancuso's
legacy remains unwritten. Welcome to the myopic world of dance
music, where 'now' and 'next' rule supreme and the 'past' rarely
gets beyond tabloid mythology.
Review:
Picking up where the fantastic The Loft Volume 1 left off, here is
another mixed platter of prime soul, jazz, disco, house and funk.
The influence of David Mancuso's loft parties can't be under-rated
- in it's day they were the hottest tickets in town and inspired a
whole generation of DJ's to come. Mancuso was all about sonics and
atmosphere - indeed he was known for stunts like dropping a six
minute recording of a rainstorm into the middle of a set, panning
it right across the sensational and much copied sound system. It
wasn't so much about playing the 'right' tunes as it was taking
your audience somewhere - as such the club cultivated its own
eclectic list of classics.
Perhaps the best thing about this compilation is that it is a true
reflection of what was going on in clubland in the 70's and early
80's - it wasn't all Gloria Gaynor and Patrick Hernandez as
numerous TV compilations would have most people believe. It
documents a time when it truly was just about the music -
pre-superstar DJ, pre-superclub, this compilation is as educational
as it is enjoyable. Kinda makes you wish you'd been there.....
