Compost boss Michael Reinboth has nothing but praises for the
exciting music of Native Force. "Music Box blew me away when I first
heard it and I have rarely heard such an energetic good quality
electrified and rough tech-jazz record in the last ten years", says
Reinboth, "For me it is alongside the likes of Galaxy II Galaxy
Hi-Tech Jazz or Patrick Pulsinger's Claire one of the rare
outstanding powerful jazz-tech moments". Could be an electro-jazz
future classic. The track Music Box was listed in Gilles Peterson's
playlist in Straight No Chaser, and seen in Jazzanova's playlist as
well. Listen carefully to the track after Music Box called Rain. It
is one of this beautiful deep moody downbeat moments, which are quiet
rare nowadays. And Chase is a quirky percussive house-tune with lots
of live elements played by Simon Donohue.
Native Force (a.k.a. Simon Donohue) started producing music at the
age of 14 using 4 track tape machines, guitars and drum machines. At
18 he landed a job as a recording engineer at a commercial recording
studio. From there he entered the world of electronic music. He soon
joined forces with Andy Smith and formed the Sunrise Society which
went on to produce a number of Detroit Techno style EP's on London's
Pacific Records. In 96 Simon went solo and started producing
Drum'n'Bass under the name of Odyssey. His first D&B track
Expressions was released on 720 records/ Logical Progression 2.
Expressions quickly gained anthem status being played to death by the
likes of Fabio, Bukem and Blame.
While working at the recording studio Simon engineered for numerous
artists covering a broad spectrum of musical styles, one group in
particular, an African percussion band, inspired Simon to learn to
play congas and percussion. This in turn, led to the production of a
track called Ritual. Ritual was a fusion of D&B and manic African
percussion which crossed over into all areas of the D&B scene being
played by Blame, Goldie, Doc Scott and the rest of the MetalHeadz
crew. Simon also produced more jazz influenced downtempo tracks for
Good Looking Record's sub labels such as Earth and Cooking Records.
In late 1999 Simon started a new project under the name of Native
Force and signed to DJ C1's acclaimed Zozan Music label, from where
Compost picked up this release.
Native Force project has only just began and is destined to bring
some new, fresh and surprising music to light in the near future.
