twisted nerve was founded in late 1997 by grand central dj and
designer andrew shallcross (aka andy votel) and singer-songwriter
damon gough (badly drawn boy). the label was originally inspired
by a wide range of alternative influences such as...
one-off northern soul record labels. european experimental labels
such as ecm. a rebellion to dance music. pushing your luck. woody
allen. a hayley mills film. french eps on philips and barclay. a
reaction to lazy music journalism. a love for the band united
states of america. warp records. wurlitzer jukebox records. music
and design in unison. bruce springsteen. a cottage industry.
making something out of nothing. the amount of music you can
squeeze on to a seven inch single. breaking down all musical
boundaries and genres. hip-hop. b-grade u.s. psych bands. a
pleasant surprise at the cheap cost of manufacturing jukebox
singles in nashville, tennessee.
andy and damon didn't want to set up a business. they wanted to
make five hundred 7" records with cheap two colour sleeves and
sell them to their friends before the end of the year. they sold
the records in less than a month and soon after got embraced,
mithered and intimidated by the music industry. they then got
another record made and proceeded to put out records by our
like-minded friends and then they became a record company, made
films, designed graphics and organised events.
