Katowice-based Mayzel recently released their second album, courtesy of
Defense Records. Of course, when it comes to thrash metal this band
represents, you probably won't find better label anywhere else in Poland
to release such genre of metal. I start off with good stuff, in Mayzel's
music. What I really like about the album are guitar melodies, both in
terms of rhythm and solos, of which there are quite a few and they're
all quality ideas. I think the melodies are a major part of this album's
recognition. Simply put, when the music is aggressive and thrashing like
hell, smart melody is a great balm for eventual wounds this guys can
give you in process. The band reminds me of bands like The No Mads and
Horrorscope, though it doesn't surpass recent discoveries like Species
or Exul from Poland.
I like many parts of Mayzel's music, It's a mix of Silesian thrash with
a touch of Bay Area thrash. The album is varied; Mayzel likes things to
happen in their music, hence the many solos and changes in song
structure, especially when it comes to the guitarists, who combine their
music in the right direction, while drummer has many good, but not
extravagant moments. The bass lines sound pretty decent.
A less compelling element of their music is overly brutal vocals, which
sound too death metal for my taste - for me, clean vocals are essential
in thrash, so I think that vocals lack finesse in this record, however I
don't feel overly dissatisfied. The production and sound of the songs
aren't bad, but I feel they could be better, more crystalline,
especially in the drum mix.
For me, Mayzel's strongest selling points on this album are songs like
"Pathetic Existence" and "Endless Falls" for their catchy hooks and
solos. "Kaos" features cool sequences and drum sounds. "Crush Victim" is
probably the most mature and structured track on the album. I can hear
the thrash in the vein of "Exodus in places." I'd also add "Reaper
(Thrash Machine)" for its razor-sharp riffs, metallic bass, and good
dynamics throughout. This song is an outburst of energy.
