It's possible that due to this deluge of new releases, I completely
missed the news that Inhuman Condition would release their third
full-length in 2025. Possibly, because option number two explains my
laziness even better - their second full-length, "Fearsick", simply
wasn't impressive. Of course, I approached this limb of former Massacre
members with a fair amount of reserve from the very beginning, but the
return of the most righteous Massacre with Kam Lee had already
disappointed me twice, so a completely normal reaction was to look for
replacements for this distinctive style in other bands. This time,
another opportunity fell on Inhuman Condition, and it coincided with the
release of their new album, so I didn't have to strain too hard to find
a decent album in this style. "Mind Trap" brings the expected an upturn
in form.
Gravity blasts, slam breakdowns, brave bass patterns or broadening
horizons... you still won't find any of that with Inhuman Condition! On
"Mind Trap", we get an old-school death metal that stands in opposition
to any innovations (perhaps apart from more contemporary production),
and its primary goal is classic shredding with clearly defined patterns,
very simple riffs, a generous dose of heaviness, impact, and swing, a
natural sound, and a Lovecraftian atmosphere. This is, of course, the
basis for this approach to primal death metal, which appeared earlier on
"Fearsick" and on the revived Massacre (primarily "Resurgence"),
although these examples lacked life and identity, and also felt like
cheap sentimentalism. On "Mind Trap" the situation is completely
different - here you can hear that the band was truly excited about
every sound, even if it's quite reproducible and the level of
extremeness does not exceed "From Beyond".
It's hard to say how long the songs from "Mind Trap" will fit into the
Massacre canon, as they tend to be less hit-worthy, but they easily
surpass the aforementioned comeback albums under Kam Lee's leadership.
The best tracks are those dominated by riffs with a distinctive sawing,
snappy, thrash rhythms, Taylor Nordberg's solos (surprisingly, with less
of the Rick Rozz-esque whammy bar), and the constant wheezing of lyrics.
"Mind | Tool | Weapon", "GodShip", "Obscurer" and "Severely Lifeless"
stand out in this regard. The rest of the material is also decent, but
monotonous parts, carbon copies of previous riffs and a safe adherence
to familiar patterns are much more common.
So if Kam Lee's takeover of Massacre seems like the typical return of
old-timers looking to cash in on a single, cult album with minimal
effort, a better alternative would be to reach for "Mind Trap", a
relative Inhuman Condition band. Unlike those trials, Terry Butler & co.
on their third album has a punch, sounds more authentic and doesn't
strain to hark back to the old days at every turn. Of course, there's no
wow effect, no angst or smuggling in unconventional influences, but
that's not the point of such albums. "Mind Trap" is one of those albums
that focuses to evoke the glory days of yesteryear in a modern setting.
It accomplishes that task quite well.

Never change a winning team is an often used sagacity, at least here in
Germany. And quite often this has failed very badly. But that┤s exactly
what Floridian deathers Inhuman Condition have obviously promised to
themselves. Starting with the cover which was once again created by Dan
Goldsworthy where the band gets tortured by their cover mascot, the ôRat
Godö up to the music which hasn┤t changed too much really since the guys
founded the band back in 2021.
Just let me go back to that time if you aren┤t trusted with the band.
Maybe you know that ôInhuman Conditionö once was a pretty cool
old-school EP by Massacre in 1992 (and in my opinion together with the
legendary debut ôFrom Beyondö the only good release by the band).
Together with Kam Lee, Taylor Nordberg and Jeramie Kling were members in
Massacre in 2019/20 until the guys quit their job there because of some
irreconcilable differences with Lee they just founded their own Massacre
band (with material originally written for the upcoming Massacre album
and with original founding member Terry Butler on board). So Inhuman
Condition was spawn and since then the guys release quite regularly very
entertaining groovy death metal albums. Apart from the 1000 other bands
the guys are involved in. Together with their cover creator they are
obviously some of the busiest guys in the scene, I guess.
And so it isn┤t a big surprise what Inhuman Condition is offering to the
fans on ôMind Trapö (which is already their third full-length album).
Most of the songs blow you away in some catchy mid-tempo grooves and
this all sounds much more like some typical 90s Floridian death metal
than most of the still active bands that released albums during the last
years.
But there are also some tracks that differ a little bit from the rest.
ôScience Of Discontentö is a more dissonant track (not like Deathspell
Omega or Portal) but in some riffs this is quite obvious that the guys
want to break out of the standard scheme. Apart from that, they have put
in some really cool breaks and twists here and with the deep growls and
the 90s-style guitars this is a very nice old-school track. ôFace For
Laterö is the fastest track that grooves as hell though. This one is
galloping through the speakers like a warhorse through the enemy lines.
But all the nine tracks are kept quite in the same style (everything
else would be a big surprise and I guess for that are the other bands
the guys are involved in fine for) but never start to get boring. This
is a really solid work of old-school death metal.
Maybe the biggest difference to the previous releases is that Jeramie is
using his voice in a much diverse way. He doesn┤t use it in a more or
less one-dimensional way anymore but tries to stress out his words and
emphasizes the vocals much more than before.
Inhuman Condition once more have written a very good album that is
perfect for a groovy beer (Erdinger alcohol-free) session at the pool.
It is well-produced and there aren┤t flaws to find. Maybe you can
criticize that is too stereotype but when I listen to old-school death
metal, I really don┤t want any operas or experiments. Never change a
winning team has succeeded this time for sure!
