Some records feel destined for rediscovery, and Kevan
Frost's "Give It Up" is exactly that kind of story.
Originally recorded in a fleeting window of studio time -
earned in place of payment - the track captures a moment of
raw creativity for the artist. Frost, a seasoned studio
musician who worked alongside artists like George Clinton
and Boy George, poured everything into the session, playing
and arranging the entire piece himself. The result is a
fully realised track that somehow slipped through the cracks
- until now. Thanks to Rush Hour and the ears of Mark
Grusane, "Give It Up" finally gets its due. The original
version is a smooth blend of dance-pop, post-disco and
synth-laced funk - effortlessly catchy, with the kind of
crossover appeal that could've easily lit up charts in the
90s. There's a bittersweet quality in hearing something like
this that never had its moment. Like discovering lost
treasure. Grusane's vocal mix has more of a club potential,
extending grooves and emphasising the rhythm section. It
feels like the 12" version that should have been if it was
released at the time. The dub mix allows features more of
the instrumental and the bassline becomes more pronounced.
Another great alternative to this piece of the past that is
here for us to enjoy today.
