On Try To Be HopefulÆs opening track Burn Masculinity, Nye Todd recognises
the privilege associated with identifying as male, at the same time
decrying the ôhistory of persecution and abuseö which the world has
inflicted upon transgender individuals. With this paradoxical
acknowledgement, he encapsulates the emotional intelligence of The Spook
SchoolÆs second album. Where their debut Dress Up tentatively introduced
the theme of sexual identity, here itÆs triumphantly thrust in the face of
the world, reflecting the bandÆs ever-growing confidence in who they are.
ItÆs never more apparent than on Binary, a gloriously spiky indie pop
racket about the fluidity of gender. All told, this is one of the most
vital releases of 2015, both in terms of its importance and its
     addictiveness.
