Having served two years' national service in the late fifties, John
Peel spent six months working at Townhead Mill in Rochdale. In 1960
he sought a new life in America, beginning work with the Dallas
Cotton Exchange and proceeding to selling crop insurance in West
Texas. His radio career began as the 'MerseyBeat' scene grew; John's
hometown knowledge and contacts became invaluable and he was
appointed 'Resident Beatle Expert' by KLIF in Dallas. His first
full-time DJ work came from KOMA in Oklahoma City and after eighteen
months he moved on to KMEN in San Bernardino, California. Returning
to Britain in 1967, John continued with pirate station, Radio London.
After the station was removed from the air he joined the fledgling
Radio One. He has remained there ever since and is synonymous with
being first, fairest and bravest with new music. He is undoubtedly
Britain's most risk-taking DJ. After his spectacular soundclash at
the 2000 Sonar Festival, John was invited to host a 'Peel Session'
room at FabricLive. This is his first-ever mix CD and it captures his
all-out approach to club DJing.
"I was amazed and very, very scared to be playing Fabric and it was
just fantastic. It was much better than the gigs I used to do in the
sixties and seventies or eighties. A couple of times I had to be
escorted back to my car by a phalanx of policeman and on one
occasion, in Silith near Carlisle, I had to be escorted to the county
border, to a hotel, because I'd gone down so badly. So Fabric was
amazing, fantastic. It was as great a night as I've had in my life
and people will say 'oh, he would say that wouldn't he', but it
actually was. The fact that people were singing 'Teenage Kicks' eight
minutes after I'd finished was unforgettable."
John has collected countless awards and many honorary degrees. He
lives in Suffolk with his wife, Sheila, and broadcasts regularly from
his home 'Peel Acres. His long-time friend and producer John Walters
(who sadly passed away last year) regarded him as "the single most
important figure in popular music of the last 25 years." Together
they made some of the most ground-breaking radio of an era.
"This CD isn't supposed to be mood-establishing. If anything, it's
mood-demolishing. These are some of my favourite songs... there's a
real risk I'll listen to nothing else ever again."
