In recent years, there has been a revived interest in
traditional heavy metal, with various bands emulating Black
Sabbath, Judas Priest, and the like. Australia's Dracula is
definitely one of those bands, with their inspiration seemingly
coming from the hard rock and speed metal bands of the late 70s
and early 80s. As their debut demo Open Graves at Midnight
shows, they wear these influences on their sleeves.
The demo is quite short, with only an intro track and three
songs included on the tape. In these three (four counting the
intro) tracks, the band showcases their excellent songwriting
ability and musicianship. For the most part, the songs on the
album are attention grabbing speed metal that would have easily
fit into Mercyful Fate's Melissa, especially the high pitched
and melodic vocals. In my opinion, Dracula's vocalist is one of
the few that have managed to emulate the great King Diamond in
both sinister lows and howling highs. He also has a bit of Brian
Ross in there too. Much like the classic NWOBHM band Satan, the
songs manage to keep a subtly strange and dark atmosphere, which
is one of the best aspects of the album. The intro track is a
great example of their ability to craft an atmosphere, with its
eerie organ and sounds of a violent thunderstorm.
The performance of the band on the album is also excellent. The
riffs are awesome and memorable, from the Maiden-esque tremolo
riffing of Castle in the Darkness to the classic hard rock sound
of Possessor, which is also quite reminiscent of early Danzig.
The solos compliment the riffs well, particularly the Randy
Rhoads style tapping on the album's final track, Wolves. The
drumming has a nice, classic feel to it, bringing to mind the
heavy, pounding drumming of Bill Ward. And, as previously
stated, the vocalist is incredible and really adds a lot to the
album. It's already great, but he brings it up a level. However,
there are a few flaws. While the production is good for a demo
tape, it's still a bit muffled. The bass is also under utilized
on some tracks, making the songs feel a little bit empty.
Overall, this is an excellent start for the band. The songs have
an awesome atmosphere to them, the performance of the band is
outstanding, and the writing is very well done. This is an album
that anyone interested in the current traditional metal revival
or classic NWOBHM should check out.
