so the club's finished and you've managed to persuade your
companions to come back to your place for some after hours
business, probably centring around smoking big roll-your-own
ciggies and warm lager beer. why anyone really wants a load of
casualties talking about ufos, the cia and '70s confectionery in
their front room is anyone's guess, but it probably comes down to
wanting to appear popular. problem is, amongst this number there
will almost certainly be one irritating would-be-dj type, whose
only pleasure in life comes from flicking through other people's
record collections and saying things like, "yeah, i got that on
the original japanese promo import in '82, before it went into the
charts and they sold out." this is what happens to men when they
go too long without a girlfriend.
fila brazillia know this and understand your anxiety. which is why
they have come up with a cunning ruse to get you out of trouble -
a mix cd full of brilliant records that everyone can nod their
head earnestly to and say things like, "oh, i haven't heard this
in ages" or, "this is ace this is, i love this one, me" when a
particular favourite comes on. even that dj bloke.
so how come fila brazillia know so much about selecting late night
music? well, they've been making ludicrously good downbeat tunes
since 1991 for a start, back in the days when the rest of the uk
was rave mad and air were in short trousers. but with a background
in live music that stretches back to the '80s, hull's dave
mcsherry and steve cobby were never going to be satisfied with
just making formulaic dance music. they wanted to make records
that were challenging, that offered an accessible alternative to
the dance mainstream - a melodic manifesto of their own making if
you will. their albums, such as 1999's 'touch of cloth' are soaked
in soaring strings, thick basslines and deep rhodes piano chords,
all underpinned by intricate percussion and groovy, danceable
drums. check out their remixes for the likes of radiohead, moloko
and the orb for further proof. and if you can find their rework of
lamb's 'cottonwool', grab it and keep it very close to your chest
- it's a total classic.
but fila brazillia aren't just musicians, they can dj as well. and
it's in this guise that we find them here, as record selectors for
your perfect late-night get-together. they've weaved a truly
eclectic choice of records into one seamless mix that stretches
from the deep, deep house of mr scruff's 'get a move on' through
to the the beta band's dub-infused folk of 'it's not too
beautiful' and onto the joyous beauty of nightmares on wax's 'les
nuits'. between these tracks you'll find much, much more, but that
is for you to discover yourself in your own time. just be rest
assured that you're in very safe hands tonight.
