not so much a melting pot as a smoking cauldron of diverse musical
flavours, fourth world is the blazing joint project of three of
the world's most exciting and accomplished musicians. airto
moreira, the brilliant brazilian percussionist and modern jazz
legend is joined by his wife, flora purim, and her astonishing
voice of, all six octaves of it, while the axe monster, jose neto,
plays guitar in his own inimitable style and writes many of the
band's tunes. this music grew out of the rain forest and travelled
northwards, its percussive heartbeat pulsing through samba, jazz
and rock rhythms. it's a highly personal sound, but like the
forest global in impact.
there are strong spiritual links between africa and brazil - the
international flavour of fourth world enabled the group to
undertake the long haul to south africa to become the first
brazilian band to play in this country on the verge of major
changes. this proves that, with fourth world, the language of
music is a universal, and exhilarating celebration of life.
fourth world enjoyed an acclaimed world tour during 1997. since
then flora & airto have toured as light as a feather while jose
acted as musical director for harry belafonte and has released a
live album of the neto band's performance at guiting power village
hall. airto & flora have now put the finishing touches to what is
the group's final statement: last journey to the fourth world.
this, the ultimate creative fruition of the band, was partly
produced by the prodigious krishna booker (the factor) and diana
purim-moreira, (db).
this album is a rollercoaster of emotion, ranging from the soft
songs such as silvia and light as a feather to dynamic tracks such
as capoeira da mente, within your mind and trip to the fourth
world and terra mae. flora's tribute to the late ronnie scott,
little tear, will amaze many with the sheer beauty and youth of
her voice after three decades of singing. fourth world stand on
the rock-solid foundation of quality songwriting and faultless
musicianship that encapsulates a gamut of styles. it encapsulates
a rare stylish musicianship and a spectacular raw energy. it is
music that cannot be easily defined - a new order of music that
transcends all categories and creates one of its own. 'the last
journey'(elm8021) is arguably the most accomplished fourth world
album to date. it's powerful, passionate and progressive, bustling
with energy and ideas.
