mujaji are 2 brothers who have been writing and recording music
together for over a decade. what began as experiments on a 4-track
eventually led to their first release in 2001 as a downtempo act.
based in brooklyn they toured around the us and released tracks on
numerous labels.
new york was thriving culturally in the late 90's, hip-hop was at
its peak and downtempo was a fast growing genre. after 9/11 and
the dot-com bubble bursting the economy was rapidly deteriorating
and music took a back seat to survival for many. in this time
mujaji began focusing on incorporating songs into their music in
the hope of creating a stronger message with which to reach
people. the forthcoming album, on a bridge between clouds, is the
final draft of that message. a soulful performance of the title
track by maria solheim makes it all the more poignant.
although mujaji is now based in the uk, the record was mostly
written and recorded in a remote part of upstate new york where
the winters consist of 3 feet of snow for 6 months. the isolation
of that place yielded an introspective look at what was happening
to the world around them. culturally, economically and politically
the us has been in a state of turmoil. the album represents a
reaction to this over a 4 year period right up until the present.
it is not an attempt at prescribing the ultimate solution, it
merely poses a simple question to the listener: 'is this the way?'
