ig culture on virgin records whoÆd a thunk it? i donÆt know about
you, but heÆs best known to me for the song he produced on roots
manuvaÆs album (though i know heÆs put out an instrumental album
for emcees to freestyle over and a whole host of other things no
doubt). at first, ædem phoniesÆ seemed an incongruous insertion,
but after having lived with the lp for a while, it now makes
perfect sense. anyway, he is signed to virgin, and he does make
wicked music, as shown on this ep, a taster of his forthcoming
album.
the first song is æonly oneÆ and is, quite simply, astonishing.
searing strings combine with beautifully plodding bass plunks, odd
sounds and a crazy, insane riddim to create a truly bewildering
soundscape, made all the more captivating by horns jumping in and
out of the mix. the vocals by eska turn this into what some people
might call nu skool electro soul, but iÆd be tempted to shoot
them. repeatedly. itÆs the best r&b song of 2001 you havenÆt
heard. and the next one is probably even better! certainly on the
vocal front, æparaÆ is a lot more cohesive and much more like a
story led r&b song, basically about the paranoid nature of the
singer, eric appapoulay, who successfully reveals the workings of
his mind to the rapt listener. a less involving beat than before,
but soothingly lovely.
ærocana hardplaceÆ continues the line of wicked songs named after
studios. for real, this loose limbed funk is the type of music
james brown would be making if he was still alive (yeah, i know he
is, but, did you hear his last album?). all is dominated by the
imperious bass line, but the funky trumpet and dancing keys really
add that touch of class. all is topped off though by the live
drumming on the track courtesy of antonio feola ruff and funky
(thereÆs a nice, nice break here) then smooth and jazzy for the
second half of the song. with the majesty of the previous three
tracks, æsurvivalÆ would have to hit mount kilimanjaro style
heights to improve on the general quality standard of this ep, and
in fact it ends up being rather disappointing; slightly dull and
repetitive without and distilled funk. even so, this release is
one you should seriously, seriously consider getting, cos itÆs got
some really amazing beatage. æwowÆ is all i can say. only the
final track stops it from getting a really top mark. (note: for
ærhymesÆ, read ævocalsÆ, yeah, yeah).
